What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?

Every industry has its myths—stories insiders repeat until they sound like truth. But behind the slogans and the spin are unspoken (and sometimes unnoticed) realities – we asked some of the wisest folks we know to share what lies they’ve noticed in their industries.

One of the biggest lies in the beauty industry is that there’s a one-size-fits-all standard of beauty. The truth is, every client is unique, with different skin tones, hair textures, and personal styles and that should be celebrated, not minimized. One of the biggest lies the healthcare industry tells itself is that more technology, more billing codes, and more metrics automatically equal better care. We’ve convinced ourselves that efficiency is the same as effectiveness, when in reality, the patient experience is often getting worse—not better. There’s this long-standing myth that wine has to be exclusive, snobby, or overly academic to be respected-and that if you don’t speak in tasting notes that sound like poetry, you’re somehow not “serious” about wine. One of the biggest lies in pediatrics is that the traditional insurance-based system is “good enough” for families, that quick, rushed visits, endless waiting rooms, and limited access to your doctor are just the way it has to be.
