Brittany Ward shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Brittany, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What battle are you avoiding?
Hustle Culture. It’s crept into every facet of life, and while I agree urgency is important, it can be the enemy of a truly deep and meaningful existence. My desire to “do more” can’t compete with peace, joy, and space to receive life’s deep breaths.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Brittany, a deep thinker and lover of people and travel, turned founder and CEO of The 21st Agency, a creative marketing agency. We function like a consulting firm with a marketing toolkit. We simplify complex business problems through innovative solutions to help our client’s shine.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
A chameleon searching for a way to please too. many people at my expense. Today, I know my superpower is the fact that there is only one of me. My preferences, desires, ideas, and joy truly light the way to a life that is firmly planted and uniquely my own. I feel so blessed to have such an impact and trust of countless business and community members – to shape their growth and success. What an honor to have a team of people that others think of to refer and choose when they have many options.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
This is a double-edged sword. For every experience in my life that has hurt, there’s been immense learning and growth. I can firmly say that I am grateful for each and every fumble and injury. Those moments (some longer than others) helped me develop empathy and a testimony that propelled me into the discovery of myself, of my strengths, my failures, and most importantly, my faith. Without the love and freedom of Jesus, I would be lost.
So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Where are smart people getting it totally wrong today?
That being smart is all you need. Sometimes you need to show up dumb, knowing you know nothing, and willing to listen, learn, and remain malleable to what the current problem requires. And sometimes that means changing your mind, approach, solution, or outlook to accommodate something better. We’re in a wild moment in history where technology, culture, and industry have never been changing at a faster pace. Being smart means, you have to stay curious and hungry to what you don’t know.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
Sadly, yes. Over and over. As a mission-focused founder and type A personality, goals have always played a role in my life both personally and professionally. What I have accomplished, my younger self would be so excited and impressed, and yet I forget to celebrate the wins before moving on to the next thing. The cup that I have been continually trying to fill financially, romantically, personally, and even academic accomplishments will never present the level of gratitude and joy that finding an unwavering faith has brought me.
