Sarah Mae Gunn shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Sarah Mae, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
Integrity. It’s hard fought. It’d be much easier to lie my way through multiple situations. I choose for my words and commitments to hold the highest value.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Sarah Mae Gunn, I’m an artist who supports artists. I’m an original songwriter and the founder of The Songwriters Circle in Central Florida. The Songwriters Circle is a writers round showcase and then some! It’s a collective community where artists collaborate, cultivate, befriend, follow, promote, cover, and write with one another. It doesn’t end there. It’s growing and adapting to our ever changing days. We have a lot of cool new stuff happening!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who taught you the most about work?
That’d be my husband. The man has no quit, haha. I ain’t kidding!! His dedication is unmatched. Although, I’m far from lazy myself. He reminds me that complacency is not suited for folks that want to grow. So we work hard, sometimes it’s uncomfortable but then we acclimate. Wash, rinse, repeat.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Very few people can see your suffering, even fewer will truly care and next to none will ever admit that. That could be seen as unfortunate, however the truth is, this made fighting for what I believe in 10 x’s easier. I have learned to never wait for someone’s helping hand.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Whoa. Too many to count!! Haha. I’d say the ones that bother me the most are 1.) that artists need to perform cover songs to appease the masses. 2.) That “followers” matter more than artistry. 3.) That it’s a competitive industry.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What will you regret not doing?
I guess that would be, not taking The Songwriters Circle as far as it can go. I can’t know how far that is unless I try. I’m a fan of making informed decisions, and the community has informed me that they want The Songwriters Circle to stay!
