Rising Stars: Meet Maurice Murray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maurice Murray.

Hi Maurice, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m Maurice, 33 years old born and raised in Tampa. My story is pure destiny. If anyone asked me five years ago, would I be doing photography, I would have laughed. I think the day I picked up a camera is when I began tapping into my creativity. I’m personally not a photogenic person but I admire the story a photo can tell.

Thanks to my sister Sherron, who had a camera lying around the garage my journey began. I had no idea how to operate a camera other than the button to push to take the picture. Something within me wanted to figure it out so I began researching and watching videos on youtube.

The more I watched and read the more it started to make sense to me. My family loves having to get-togethers for anything, lol. So I used that as an opportunity to practice. The more I practiced, the better I became and my interest continued to grow. I created an IG page and posted my photos. Before I knew it I was receiving inquiries to do a photoshoot and it hasn’t stopped since.

I had no idea it would grow as much as it has but it just goes to show what meant for you will be whether you know it or not. Two years in, I’ve shot weddings, and events worked with some amazing models in various states, and helped others build their brands through photography.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
We all know nothing that’s worth having comes easy.

I’ve definitely seen my ups and downs and I’m sure there’ll be more obstacles to face. Learning to edit has probably been the biggest challenge and still is to this day. There are so many different elements to photography so everything cant is approached the same way.

The biggest obstacle for me personally was staying true to myself and the art I wanted to create. Social media has such a powerful influence in today’s society I struggle with what type of photography I wanted to do and doubted the quality of my work.

Once I began viewing photography as art I realized there’s really no wrong or right. I understood that my visions wouldn’t satisfy everyone and that was ok. Understanding this is key as I continue on my journey.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As a photographer, I mainly shoot portraits and headshots. I’m finding that’s my favorite thing to capture and edit. My main focus is creating something that looks natural with great detail and I feel that’s what’s most appreciated about my work.

I feel what sets me apart from others is that photography is a place where I feel free. Outside of making sure my clients have a great experience while working with me, there’s no real pressure so it allows me to be more flexible and have fun with creativity.

The biggest thing I’m proud of is that everything about this journey has been organic. I’ve set no expectations on where I want this to go, I’m just enjoying the ride.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Instead of trying to create opportunities, be ready when opportunities are presented. Live in the moment, don’t miss out on the journey because you’re focused on getting to the finish line.
