Rising Stars: Meet Liz Reyes of Liz Reyes Art

Today we’d like to introduce you to Liz Reyes.

Hi Liz, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been tattooing locally for over 20 years. I started out as an artist first,I’ve always drawn and painted, and tattooing just became the path where that turned into a career. What I’ve always loved about it is the one-on-one connection with people. You’re sitting with someone and creating something really personal that they’re going to carry with them.

Over time, I also started painting more seriously. Painting feels different, it’s not collaborative like tattooing, so I get to explore stories that are more meaningful to me.

My husband, Dimas Reyes, is also a tattoo artist and painter, and he’s been creating for over 20 years as well. We opened Kingdom Studio together in 2012 here in Sarasota, and it really feels like something we’ve built side by side not just as business owners, but as artists and partners.

And then at home, I’m a mom of seven and we homeschool, so life is very full. We spend a lot of time creating as a family, cooking, gardening, and just hanging out.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Being a creative is not for the weak! You really have to be self motivated and brave to put yourself out there all the time.

You constantly have to be generous with your energy in either the creative aspects or the ever boring business side of it all. But I think the connections you make along the way are worth all the effort.

We’re very fortunate to have this wonderfully curated life.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love creating figurative and botanical work in both my paintings and tattoos.

My tattoo work is very collaborative so the meaning depends on what my clients want to convey.

In my paintings I like to explore themes of transformation, growth and renewal through my faith. The imagery is often still figures and botanical but through the lens of scripture.

I love painting with bold, unexpected colors. I use color more for feeling than for realism, choosing bold, saturated tones to express mood and meaning. I like strong contrasts because they help the work feel alive ,almost like color is doing the talking.
