Today we’d like to introduce you to Erika Resnick.
Erika, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I originally went to college for design but, I changed my major to Psychology. I always enjoyed decorating and helping my friends with their homes. When I did a renovation in my home, seven years ago, I posted some pictures for fun on Facebook and that’s how my journey began.
People had reached out to me asking if I did this for a living, so I came up with a business name, created an LLC and the rest is history. Initially, I got into repainting kitchen cabinets, but after three years of doing that I realized it was too taxing on my body so I shifted gears and was focusing on all aspects of decorating from color consultations all the way to full renovations.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t think any job is without its obstacles. My industry really took off during Covid as people were realizing what wasn’t working in their homes and wanted to make some changes. I got used to having a lot of clients and the busyness that came along with it.
When life got back to normal, I wasn’t working nearly as much and then it’s always slow during the holidays. So, in this industry, there’s not much consistency and that sometimes can be challenging
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
As I mentioned, clients hire me to help them select paint colors for their home both interior and exterior all the way to building additions, tearing down walls, gutting rooms, and rebuilding, as well as selecting furnisher and accessories. I don’t specialize in one particular area, but I really have been gravitating toward kitchen and bathroom renovations, as of late. I love selecting tile, cabinetry, and fixtures to complement those spaces. I’m most proud of the fact that I was able to do two things in my life that I’ve always wanted to do.
I was a stay-at-home mom for over 20 years and now I have a career in a field that brings me so much joy. What sets me apart is I form relationships with my clients so that I can really get a better sense of who they are, and what they’re looking for exactly and really get in their heads to learn all about their vision. I also extend any discounts I get to my clients which can wind up saving thousands of dollars.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
What I’m noticing lately is that clients who have been living in their homes for over 10 years are wanting to renovate their kitchens and bathrooms to be more up-to-date with the current trends.
I don’t see this Industry slowing down anytime soon. I’m also noticing that color and texture, especially with wallpaper are making a resurgence.
