Today we’d like to introduce you to Diane Cortes.
Hi Diane, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story with Acumen Strategist LLC began long before the company had a name. It started with a calling, a desire to serve, to build, and to empower others through knowledge, structure, and strategy. After more than 25 years working across human resources, business development, leadership, and digital marketing, I realized that my passion wasn’t tied to one industry. My passion was helping people transform their ideas into sustainable businesses and guiding companies through growth, structure, and clarity.
Acumen Strategist was born out of that purpose.
When I launched the company, it began as a small consulting practice designed to support entrepreneurs, minority-owned businesses, and organizations needing HR structure, marketing strategies, or operational guidance. What started as one-on-one projects quickly became something much bigger. Word of mouth traveled fast. Business owners came to me not only for strategy, but for guidance, leadership, and accountability. They needed someone who understood both people and business, someone who could merge Human Resources with Digital Marketing to create a complete, modern foundation for growth.
As the demand grew, so did the vision.
Acumen Strategist LLC evolved into a full HR and digital marketing firm based in Tampa Bay, serving business owners, CEOs, and decision-makers across Florida and beyond. Today, I support companies in building healthy workplaces, designing policies that protect their teams, and creating strong brands through social media, websites, and digital presence. I also coach dozens of entrepreneurs through The Centre for Women and other organizations, helping new founders build their business plans, secure funding, understand compliance, and discover their competitive advantage.
Along this journey, my commitment to community has remained at the heart of everything I do. As the former President of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Tampa Bay, I serve on boards, participate in business expos, speak at conferences, and proudly champion minority, and women-owned businesses. Every coaching session, every marketing strategy, every HR structure I help design, they all represent someone’s dream finally becoming real and sustainable.
My path has not been easy. Starting a consulting firm without investors, without a team, and without guaranteed income required faith, discipline, and resilience. There were moments where I worked alone until late at night, moments of doubt, and moments where growth felt overwhelming. But with every challenge came clarity. And with every client success came confirmation that this is exactly what I was meant to do.
Today, Acumen Strategist LLC stands as a reflection of everything I believe in: excellence, integrity, education, and empowerment. My mission remains the same to help every business owner build smarter, grow stronger, and operate with purpose.
This is not just a business for me. It is my ministry, my passion, and my way of impacting the world around me. And I’m only just getting started.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has certainly not been smooth but every challenge has shaped the leader and professional I am today.
When I launched Acumen Strategist LLC, I did it with faith, experience, and determination, but without the safety net that many established businesses enjoy. I started with limited capital, no team, and the pressure of carrying every role on my own — strategist, designer, HR advisor, marketer, administrator, and accountant. Learning to scale while maintaining excellence was a daily balancing act.
One of the biggest challenges was educating clients on the true value of strategic planning, HR compliance, and digital presence. Many small business owners are overwhelmed or unfamiliar with these areas, and part of my work has been helping them understand why structure, policies, and branding matter for long-term success. This took time, patience, and resilience.
As the business grew, I faced the complex realities of balancing client needs with personal capacity. There were moments where demand exceeded what one person could realistically deliver. Learning when to say no, when to pause, and when to reorganize became essential. Like many entrepreneurs, I had to confront burnout, self-doubt, and the feeling of being stretched in too many directions.
Another challenge has been navigating the emotional side of business coaching and HR consulting. I am often called in during difficult moments employee issues, conflict, restructuring, compliance concerns, and even crisis situations. Being the person responsible for bringing clarity, professionalism, and solutions can be heavy at times, but it has also strengthened my ability to stay calm under pressure and to guide others with empathy and wisdom.
Finally, growing a business as a Latina woman in leadership comes with its own unique obstacles. There were rooms where I had to work twice as hard to be heard, to prove my expertise, and to open doors that were not originally built for people like me. But I have always believed that our stories, our resilience, and our representation matter especially in business.
Despite the obstacles, every challenge has been a lesson and every setback an opportunity for growth. Today, I can say that the struggles have made Acumen Strategist what it is a firm built on perseverance, excellence, and strong commitment to serving the Tampa Bay business community.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am most proud about the challenges and difficulties I had to overcome. Through Acumen Strategist and my work with the Hispanic Chamber, The Centre for Women, the Minority Enterprise Development Corporation, and other organizations, I have coached hundreds of entrepreneurs as they take their first steps into business ownership. Seeing them build confidence, secure contracts, formalize their operations, and grow their businesses is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
What truly sets me apart is having a business ontology combining HR, marketing, coaching, or operations strategy. I bring all of these pieces together. I don’t just design the strategy and the businesses polices; I help implement it. I don’t just advise; I teach, guide, and walk with clients through the process. My clients often describe me as a partner, someone who listens, understands their challenges, and builds solutions that are realistic, sustainable, and tailored to their vision.
Another distinction is the heart behind my work. I believe business is not just paperwork It is purpose. It is stewardship. It is legacy. My faith guides me, my leadership experience strengthens me, and my commitment to excellence drives everything I build with my clients.
At its core, Acumen Strategist LLC is about empowering entrepreneurs helping them grow, align their teams, strengthen their foundations, That is what I love, that is what I do, and that is what makes this work so meaningful to me.
