Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex DiBrizzi.
Hi Alex , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After being featured by Voyage Tampa in 2022, I made it a priority to immerse myself in the local art community by participating in as many art markets and networking opportunities as possible. Through those connections and persistent applications to public art opportunities, I was awarded a 40’ x 30’ mural in Tampa’s Channelside District in partnership with Tampa’s Downtown Partnership, ECI Group, and Inscription Residents.
The mural is located on the east-facing wall of the building, and is visible from the Selmon Expressway from Twiggs Street. Allowing it to be experienced by thousands of commuters and visitors each day.
Since then, I have taken a temporary detour to attend electrical school and build a stable career while continuing to pursue my long-term goal of becoming a full-time muralist. I remain committed to applying for public art opportunities across the country, expanding my portfolio, and creating large-scale works that connect communities through art. My vision is to grow from a local Tampa Bay artist into an internationally recognized muralist whose work can be found around the world.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t been easy. One of the biggest challenges has been learning that creating the artwork is only part of the job. As an artist, I naturally gravitated toward the creative side, but securing large-scale mural projects requires learning how to communicate effectively with stakeholders, developers, property owners, and city officials. Understanding their goals, budgets, timelines, and vision while still staying true to my artistic voice has been a significant learning curve.
Another challenge has been getting my work in front of the right audience. Many people think talent alone creates opportunities, but I’ve learned that relationships, networking, and persistence are just as important. Over the years, I’ve spent countless hours attending art markets, applying to public art calls, building my website, refining my portfolio, and reaching out to potential clients. There have been far more rejections than approvals, but each opportunity has helped me improve my work and better understand the industry.
Today, my focus is on creating large-scale, experience-driven murals for developers, hotels, cities, and commercial spaces. I enjoy designing artwork that becomes a destination within a community—something that encourages people to stop, engage, take photos, and connect with a place in a meaningful way. While I’m proud of how far I’ve come, I still view every project as part of the learning process. My goal is to continue growing as both an artist and entrepreneur, expanding my work beyond Tampa Bay and eventually creating murals and public art installations around the world.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At the moment, I am most proud of my “Echoes of Tocobaga” mural in Tampa’s Channelside District. The scale of the project was intimidating at first, but the opportunity to tell a story rooted in the area’s history made it incredibly rewarding. Seeing the finished mural come to life and become part of Tampa’s visual landscape exceeded my expectations and gave me confidence to pursue even larger public art projects.
Alongside my art career, I currently work as an electrical apprentice with Norlee Group while attending electrical school. The trade has taught me valuable lessons in problem-solving, project management, safety, and working within large teams. My goal is to continue growing within the company while developing the skills and discipline that also help me succeed as an artist and muralist.
What sets my work apart is my attention to detail and my fascination with the subtle changes happening around us every day that many people overlook. I incorporate color-shift interference pigments, color shift glitter materials, and layered textures that transform as lighting conditions change throughout the day. As sunlight moves across the surface, viewers experience different colors, reflections, and details depending on the time of day, season, and viewing angle. This sense of movement encourages people to engage with the artwork from multiple perspectives, creating an experience that evolves throughout the day, rather than remaining static depending on lighting and angle of view.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a sports kid growing up, but always doodling on something. I played soccer, football and then track in high school. I stopped all them when I got to 10th grade and pursued art fully. Even got kicked out of my Spanish class from doodling instead of paying attention and was able to take another art class.
