Meet Tim Sabo of Mathnasium of Lakeland Highlands

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Sabo.

Hi Tim, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, played baseball, basketball, and football growing up, and was valedictorian of my high school. I went to Florida Southern College from 2016-2022 playing baseball, majored in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, minored in both math and physics, and then got an MBA. I spent one more year training and pursuing professional baseball, managed to get signed by a team, but got injured and cut after one week. Shortly thereafter, I got hired as the Center Director here at Mathnasium.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Working at Mathnasium has not been a smooth road. I came in at a time when the business was in need of a major overhaul and a complete spiritual reawakening. We were bleeding customers and not really signing up any new customers, and it took us a good 6-12 months of me working here before things finally started to turn around and we started gaining some traction in our community and really providing a service that our customers could be happy about receiving. Now parents are loving us and were saving math for kids all over Lakeland.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We are a math learning center for students kindergarten through 12th grade, and we’re also capable of helping adults get GEDs, teaching certificates, as well as being able to help out with some college needs as well. We specialize in identifying where kids are at with their math ability regardless of what class they’re in, and come up with a plan to help get them back on track if they’re struggling with grade level material, or work to advance them with enrichment material if and when they are ready for it. What sets us apart is our 1:4 instructor to student ratio, which allows for one-on-one individualized attention without promoting learned helplessness. I feel most proud when I hear kids talking to their parents about how they’re ACTUALLY learning math from us compared to traditional tutoring they’ve received in the past, or when parents tell me how much fun their kids have when they’re here, and they’re relieved that it is so much easier to get their kids to come here than they thought it would be. We’re known for making math fun, especially for elementary/middle school kids, but anyone will have a great time here because we’re just a great bunch of people who keep it lighthearted while making sure the kids master and retain knowledge instead of just going through the motions. I would like readers to know that we are not tutoring, we are full on instruction, and be aware that almost every parent of a student I meet drastically underestimates how much work their student needs to put in to get caught up to where they should be in the classroom, let alone to thrive.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t really spend time thinking about luck. If you work hard you’ll make your own luck sooner or later.

Pricing:

  • We are among if not the most premier-priced educational option in town, but hourly we’re pretty in line with high end traditional “tutoring” and have SO much more to offer.
