Starting Over Doesn’t Mean Starting From Zero: My Journey Building The Beauty Collection Salon & Spa
My story in the beauty industry began when I was 20 years old in Ecuador. From a very young age, I understood that beauty was far more than just a profession for me—it was a way to express creativity, build deep connections, and empower women to feel beautiful, confident, and extraordinary.
Over the years, I developed my mastery as a hair colorist, transformation and extension specialist, professional makeup artist, and event stylist. A massive part of my career was dedicated to creating complete looks for women during the most significant moments of their lives—especially brides, quinceañeras, and high-profile social events.
For 22 years, I owned and operated my own salon in Ecuador. Through relentless hard work and dedication, that dream grew into a large, highly recognized salon with a talented team of stylists. I also had the privilege of preparing candidates for some of the most prominent beauty pageants in my city—an experience that allowed me to bring together all my passions: hair, makeup, styling, and total image design. I didn’t just build a business; I built a reputation and a loyal community of clients who trusted me completely.
Then, everything changed.
Due to severe safety concerns that threatened my family, we had to make the painful decision to leave Ecuador and step away from everything we had spent decades building. In 2020, amidst the height of the global pandemic, I arrived in Tampa. I came with no local network, a daunting language barrier, and the overwhelming fear of starting fresh in a completely new culture.
Yet, I brought the most valuable things with me: my experience, my knowledge, my creativity, my hands, and an unbreakable drive to succeed.
I started offering mobile services, carrying my tools from door to door and serving clients wherever I was needed. Every single client mattered. Word of mouth began to spread, and step by step, my work began to speak for itself. Over three years of hard work, learning, and adapting from the ground up, I finally achieved one of my biggest milestones in this country: opening The Beauty Collection Salon & Spa here in Tampa.
Today, at The Beauty Collection Salon & Spa, I offer my clients the high-end expertise I’ve built over more than three decades—from complex color corrections, balayage, and dimensional extensions to luxury bridal and event styling. But for me, this is only the beginning. My dream now is to keep growing, perfecting my craft, and mentoring the next generation of beauty professionals who are starting their own journeys.
If my journey as an immigrant has taught me one vital lesson, it is this: Starting over doesn’t mean starting from zero.
You can land in a city where no one knows your name, struggle with a new language, and feel terrified of the unknown. But no one can ever take away what you carried with you along the way: your talent, your experience, your discipline, and your willingness to try again.
I arrived in Tampa knowing no one, carrying my tools from house to house. Three years later, I opened the doors to my own salon. And for me, that wasn’t the end of a dream—it was the beginning of an even greater one.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It was definitely not a smooth road. Leaving behind a successful 22-year career and a thriving business in Ecuador due to safety concerns for my family meant starting over in every imaginable way.
When I arrived in Tampa in 2020, right in the middle of a global pandemic, I faced three massive hurdles simultaneously:
1. The Language and Cultural Barrier: Coming to a country where I didn’t speak the language fluently was daunting. Beauty is a personal service that relies heavily on clear communication, understanding a client’s desires, and building trust. Learning to navigate a new culture while trying to express my vision was a daily struggle.
2. Rebuilding a Client Base from Zero: In Ecuador, my reputation preceded me. In Tampa, no one knew who I was. With deep humility and resilience, I picked up my tool bag and started doing mobile home visits. Earning trust one client at a time required immense patience and physical effort.
3. Adapting to a New Business Environment: Understanding local regulations, licensing, market preferences, and how to run a business in the United States was a completely new learning curve.
There were days of self-doubt and fear of the unknown. But every struggle became a stepping stone. Overcoming those challenges taught me that resilience isn’t just about enduring hard times—it’s about turning every obstacle into fuel to build something even stronger.

Clients today are far more educated about ingredients and care. The future belongs to salons that prioritize hair health alongside aesthetic beauty. We are seeing a massive demand for non-damaging color techniques, scalp care, and high-end, weightless hair extensions that preserve the natural integrity of the hair. Beauty is no longer just about temporary cosmetic changes; it is about long-term hair wellness and self-care.
Another major shift is the move toward curated, high-touch experience spaces. People don’t just want a quick haircut or basic application; they are looking for a sanctuary where they can unwind, feel genuinely cared for, and step out feeling confident. The rise of private, personalized luxury services and specialized image consulting—especially for high-profile events, brides, and transformations—will continue to define top-tier salons.
Finally, education and mentorship will become even more vital. As techniques rapidly evolve, the gap between traditional styling and high-end artistry widens. I believe the future will rely on seasoned professionals sharing decades of real-world experience to mentor the next generation, blending timeless technique with modern trends.
