Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Reschny. Them and their team share their story with us below:
After over a decade (2003) of working side by side, but independently, sisters and best friends Nicole and Katie combined forces in 2018 to transform East Lake Massage into The Elm Massage + Bodywork. Our small two-room massage studio transformed into a bustling multi-therapist bodywork clinic and teaching facility for other licensed massage therapists.
During this evolution, we also joined forces with our dear friends at Ignite Chiropractic and Wellness under one roof, which allowed us to double our treatment rooms and ability to further our positive impact on the local community. The Elm Massage + Bodywork focuses on the highest quality of therapeutic bodywork through team training and continuing education.
We specialize in a unique style of bodywork called ashiatsu barefoot massage where we use our foot as the tool to deliver delightfully deep tissue work without the discomfort of pokey fingers and elbows. We often joke that once you try this style of massage you’ll never go back to hands-on therapies.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Ha! Definitely not smooth. We have had some major learning experiences along the way. We have really begun to understand where and how to spend our money (specifically in marketing.) We wasted a lot of money in our early years.
Another valuable lesson we learned was to really understand the importance of pouring into our team so we can create a culture of excellence for both clients and teams alike. When our team is nurtured and seen, it spills over to quality client care… and that’s what it’s all about.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
What a natural next question that I may have already answered in the previous questions, so I apologize for any redundancy.
The Elm Massage + Bodywork is a multi-therapist team of massage professionals. Most of our team is certified in ashiatsu barefoot massage, or have the highest level of continued education in their niche (neuromuscular and medical massage) As a team, we focus on connecting our clients to their body and how it moves, we listen to discover more about the story of their bodies and minds.
We are next-level bodywork and not just an oily, surface-level massage. Every two years we usually have 4-5x the required amount on continuing education as a team. The science and information in the field of massage and bodywork are evolving at a rapid pace and we are here for it.
Our love of learning and growth has led us to start a teaching collective called The LMT Refinery. We offer continuing education to licensed massage therapists wanting to elevate their mindset, technique, and services in general.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
Growth is not linear. Even still, I have days that I want to throw in the towel and do something else entirely. However… those moments are just moments and not truth. Keep working towards being the best at what you do. Keep working at personal growth outside of your career and it will spill over into every aspect of your life as well.
Having a partner, mentor, or even a bestie that will walk you through the hard times, and remember that those moments are often temporary and on the other side of the hard is major growth and breakthroughs.
