Jessica Henson

Hi Jessica, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
It’s such a thrill to be here! Thanks for having us!

I’m Jessica Henson, the creative spark behind Adorn Murals™. Ever since I was a kid, art has been my happy place. I’d lose track of time, completely immersed in my own creative world. This passion led me to study fine arts, with a concentration in graphic design, while also making a splash as a collegiate swimmer at Florida Atlantic University from 2004 to 2008.

After college, I hit the road and spent an exhilarating season traveling up and down the East Coast, designing boat lettering and graphics on the boat show circuit. Yes, it was a blast! But, the pressure to take a more conventional path set in, so I dove into the “corporate world.” Eventually, I found my niche in luxury real estate. I worked on many high-profile luxury real estate projects, which were thrilling, but something was missing. I longed for a more hands-on, expressive form of art. That “something” finally clicked years later.

Today, I get to create beautiful murals with my amazing husband, Matthew, who has been my rock for almost 15 years. He’s our sales and relationship guru, making sure every client’s experience with Adorn is top-notch. Together, we transform both commercial and residential spaces, creating unforgettable, custom experiences that elevate any environment. We truly love what we do and the community we do it for!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road, and I’m actually glad for that. I believe the ups-and-downs and how we respond to them help to shape our character. My biggest challenge along the way was believing in myself and all of my abilities. I struggled with foresight and the ability to understand what I could achieve with my combined talents.

In 2012, I was asked to create a large, commissioned mural for a local church. At the time, I didn’t see murals as something in my “wheelhouse,” but I liked the challenge and it came out great! Yet, even this accomplishment didn’t spark the realization that mural painting could be my true career path. It wasn’t until 2023, after two floods severely damaged our home, that my perspective shifted. I began painting murals in my house to bring a sense of renewal and beauty. After the flood came a rainbow, and I wanted my home to feel that way.

A pivotal moment came when a neighbor, visiting to see the renovations, was captivated by my murals and commissioned a 10′ x 8′ Pegasus for her daughter’s room. (See picture below.) This project reignited my passion and confidence in my work as a muralist, leading me to fully embrace my artistic talents. Only a few days later, we established Adorn Murals™.

Since the floods, we have had the privilege of adorning many spaces in the Tampa Bay area, including Hillsborough County’s Carrollwood Village Park and Alexander Park, both open to view the murals. (See pictures below.) Our current “spotlight” mural is a 25′ x 20′ custom piece at New Life Warehouse, a volunteer-led Christian organization that helps those in need in the Tampa Bay community by delivering donated furniture and household goods. They always need donations and volunteers! (Sign up at newlifewarehouse.org)

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Adorn Murals™ are more than just art — they are conversation starters, lasting treasures, cherished additions that enhance any space’s personality. We custom design and paint murals for both interior and exterior spaces, specializing in vibrant colors, stunning florals, enticing abstracts, engaging selfie spots, realistic animals, and more!

What does success mean to you?
To me, success is failure learned from. IT IS OKAY TO FAIL. Success is a blend of learning experiences, from both you and people around you, where failures become stepping stones. It’s the process of learning from each client and endeavor, improving with every effort, and celebrating the journey as much as the achievements. As an artist, success demands dedication, humbleness, patience, the ability to adapt, openness to feedback, continuous learning, and just the right amount of confidence.
