Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Alford.
Hi Heather, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Heather Alford, founder and creator of Flourish Tampa. I’ve always been interested in event planning. While helping throw a baby shower for my soon to be nephew, I wanted to include balloons but had a hard time finding the right ones. When I finally did, they became the highlight of the event—everyone loved them. That’s when I realized how much I enjoyed working with balloons and the joy they bring to people.
I started by making giant custom balloons, and soon people began asking for balloon garlands. I had no idea what I was doing so I taught myself through trial and error.
At the time, I was the only balloon business in South Tampa, and things took off quickly. I also built great relationships with local event planners, which helped grow the business even more. What started as a small idea at that baby shower has now become a full-time business I’m truly proud of and I couldn’t be more grateful.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like most small business journeys, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—though it’s been incredibly rewarding. When I first started, I had a lot of help from my family. They were my free helpers (thank god for them!)
One of the biggest struggles I’ve faced is the unpredictability of weather. Sun, wind and rain are definitely not a balloon’s friend, and outdoor events always come with that added layer of stress.
As the business grew and events became larger and more complex, I started to feel the pressure. There’s a lot of responsibility when your work is the centerpiece of someone’s celebration—you want every detail to be just right, and that can be overwhelming at times.
Finding good help has also been a challenge. For a long time, it was just me (and the occasional family volunteer), and that became exhausting pretty quickly. Thankfully, I now have two amazing girls on my team who truly understand the vision and bring so much value to the business. We are hiring by the way!
Another ongoing challenge is the growing competition. When I started, I was one of the only balloon businesses in South Tampa. Now, the market is much more crowded—but I take that as motivation to keep leveling up, staying creative, and offering high-quality, memorable work that keeps clients coming back.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We create custom luxury balloon designs to make picture-perfect moments. We also offer backdrop and decor rentals such as shimmer walls, wooden arches and a dessert cart. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, baby shower, corporate event, mitzvah, etc. we craft every detail to match your vision.
I’m most proud of turning a simple idea into a full-time career. I started from scratch and worked hard to build something I love.
What truly sets us apart is that this isn’t a hobby or side gig—it’s a full-time, professionally run business and we operate out of a dedicated storefront right off Bay to Bay in South Tampa
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that growth isn’t always easy. There will be challenges, but if you stay consistent, keep learning, and push through the hard parts, it’s all worth it.
