Today we’d like to introduce you to Cassie Brooks.
Hi Cassie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
A few years ago, I had a conversation with my son after school where he was upset by some kids that had made fun of him at school. The conversation that followed led me to write a children’s book about this encounter called Sticks and Stones.
The journey that followed to bring this story to life taught me a lot about the publishing world and myself. Other encounters my son had inspired me to continue writing other children’s stories that have become part of the Magick in Me series.
As a queer mom and someone in an alternative spirituality, I quickly found ways to start to advocate for the communities that I am a part of and share the message behind my stories, hoping to encourage readers to be confident in who they are and who they choose to be. 2 years later, I’ve become an LGBTQIA+ advocate, area leader of Free Mom Hugs, and an international award-winning children’s author. The Magick in Me series continues with 2 more books that will be released this year and a third in early 2025.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve learned a lot along the way though. There’s been a lot of challenges with publishers wanting to change the story or illustrations or how I publicly present myself, so I chose to self-publish. It gave me creative freedom and to show up as authentically me in ways that I hope make a difference.
The message of my stories isn’t always well received since I am an LGBTQIA author and advocate. I’ve been turned away from participating in certain events as well as harassed and stalked, especially because of an upcoming release and the message and community it supports.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a published author and passionate storyteller, driven by My mission to inspire and empower young readers. With the release of my children’s picture books, “Sticks and Stones,” and “I See the Moon and the Moon Sees me,” I am poised to reach a wide audience with an uplifting and empowering message.
At the heart of my writing is my belief in the importance of embracing one’s unique self and not allowing others to define who we are.
This message is beautifully illustrated in my books through my stories about a young boy named Elijah who learns to embrace his interests, no matter what others may think. Through my writing, I hope to
inspire young readers to be confident in themselves and to love who they
are.
My journey to becoming an author has been marked by personal
growth and self-discovery. My transition from a Christian to a Pagan and my studies in witchcraft have given me a deep appreciation for the power of self-expression and the importance of staying true to one’s values and beliefs.
With my strong voice and compelling message, I hope to make a real impact in the world of children’s literature. My books are designed to inspire and empower readers of all ages to be bold, be true to themselves, and to create the magick that they seek in their own lives.
My latest one to be released, My True Colors advocates for the LGBTQIA community and brings representation for a marginalized community. It touches on social issues around trans children and it is my hope to make a difference foe those that identify in this way. I’m not afraid to take on bold topics and champion causes that empower and give voice to those that need it.
