Meet Austin Janowsky of South Tampa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Austin Janowsky

Hi Austin, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Growing up, I wanted to be an actor but I lived in upstate NY in the 80s. I was a long haired, heavy metal looking kid so I needed another outlet for my creativity. Then I fell in love with comics and decided to become a professional comic book artist/writer. My parents, though, insisted I needed a backup plan! So I took a class in commercial art which turned into a 22 year career as an artist/art director and creative director. When I retired, I still worked in comics. Amazingly I found out you could work in film outside New York or LA!

I have had a wild 30 year career working for a multitude of publishers over the years on titles like: • Iron Man for Marvel • Satellite Falling for IDW, • Red Sonja for Dynamite, • Invincible for Image • Nightmare World for Devil’s Due • Evil Dead 2 Tales of the Ex Mortis with Space Goat. Tomb Raider with Top Cow. I have also worked for dozens of Indie companies on smaller comic titles. Presently I am the writer/creator of the series Stanley the Snowman with Scout Comics, Divine Retribution with Second Sight,  Zombies We’re Human Too and A Killer and the Dead with my own publishing imprint Tin Sky Media.

Tin Sky Media is also where I have written/directed/produced films, web series and more. My most recent films are “A Killer and the Dead” and “Killer Magic!”I’ve also directed the documentary “Coach Valdes and the Secret Weapon – Overload”, “Axe Soup” and “Mortem Happens.”

Since 2016, I became a working actor having booked Co-Star, Guest Star, Supporting, and Leading roles in TV and film. These projects are scheduled to be shown or have already been seen in theaters/streamed on networks like • NETFLIX • Apple + • Peacock • Amazon • Oxygen • TruTV • YouTube. Currently You can see me in the Hallmark movie The Soulmate Search and Apple+ new series Bad Monkey starring Vince Vaughn.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. The bumps in the road, the detours, road blocks and horrible weather over the years have made the smooth parts that much better. Working in any creative field can be filled with land mines both personally and professionally. Internally fighting Imposter Syndrome while those outside doing all they can to bring you down and doubt yourself. I had to learn to do things my way and try to enjoy the journey. In my twenties and thirties, i was so worried about “making it”, Making big money, status and recognition that I did not enjoy the small victories along the way. This helped me learn to do so when I got into the film industry. By enjoying all of it, the highs and lows, you can be more creative and elevate your craft. This will help you enjoy even more success!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am an actor, a retired creative director, I create comics and movies. Here are some highlights!

I had started working in comics for six month before I published my first comic October 1994 called 7th Millennium. It was distributed nationwide and we made a profit! There were 1,500 copies ordered which was unheard of for a comic made by no one knew!
I was a hybrid in the 90s which helped me get a lot of opportunities to get work for some big companies. I was able to illustrate but also knew the latest design programs (Photoshop, Quark, Indesign, Illustrator) and use the MAC & PC. I lucky to work for Disney, Universal Studios, NASCAR, Warner Bros, Verizon as an artist/designer/art director.
After working in comics for thirty years. My all age comic Stanley the Snowman sold thousands of copies of issue #1 and needed a 2nd printing with the distributor.
My first big acting gig was on Bad Monkey on Apple+ TV. I acted across Zach Brath (Scrubs) Rob Delaney (Deadpool),
My Production company likes to make films that are a bit different in each genre is chooses. My Documentary I directed is a 30 for 30 style film about Court of Legends Basketball Coach, Principal Coach Herman Valdes who worked in Tampa at Robinson high school. Madison middle school and Bayshore Christian School.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I have had good luck in having relationships with people that helped me create the moments that defined my careers. I have had bad luck with my personal life until that all changed when I met my wife. Since then, every day has been lucky for me.
