Today we’d like to introduce you to Ambee Stephens.
Hi Ambee, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My name is Ambreetta Stephens (Ambee). I am a daughter, sister, partner, aunt, niece, cousin, friend, and finally, the Founder and CEO of EmpowHERment. I am the oldest of nine. The only one in my family to graduate, go to college, and now get my master’s degree. After losing my father to suicide, I found myself looking for support in one place. I had gone through an immeasurable amount of pain and wanted deeply to turn it into something positive. I started a Facebook group that grew from 0-700 women in one year! We met monthly at different places to discuss topics like self-love, self-care, healthy relationships, etc. After doing that for two years, I decided to grow EmpowHERment to a nonprofit organization. Now, we have advocacy services, support groups, and empowerment shops. In October, I opened a community center for women to have a safe place where all of these services are housed at but also a place to learn and grow. EmpowHERment is something I have so proud of. For someone who has gone through what I have gone through, I’m using what shaped me, to help other women rise.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This question can go one way or the other. To be honest, I have gone through a lot. I would say the challenges and how I have overcome them have shaped me to be the person I am today. If we are talking about the challenges everyone knows about, its easy to say, yes- I’ve dealt with loss, heartbreak, failure, etc. But, I think for the sake of this interview, id like to dive deeper. Be more transparent. One of the challenges I experienced, and still do is Growth. Growth within myself and growth around me. Not everyone has been happy about my success. Not everyone is rooting for me and that’s a challenge within itself. But, with GROWTH comes all CHALLENGES and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
EmpowHERment is a women’s empowerment community center committed to helping women rise through our advocacy services, support groups, and empowerment workshops. We are proud to serve all women regardless of race, culture, and background. What sets us apart is that women can come to us for something as simple as work stress to as complex as ending a marriage. We are literally here to help women rise. Regardless of what that looks like!
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Ah! I was an old soul. My grandma was my best friend. We spent time reading, cooking, and talking. All of things that I still love to do now. I was a sweet child that talked a lot. Bossy and I knew it.
