Meet Abby Johnson of Matterhorn Business Development

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abby Johnson.

Hi Abby, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In my teens, I was in an alt-rock band, dead set on being a professional musician. I graduated high school early at 16, and didn’t go to college, because “who needs college when you’re in a rock band,” right? When I graduated, I started working for my dad, Dr. Greg Winteregg, at his dental management training company where they teach dentists how to run the business side of their practices.

I started out just doing coffee runs, filing, and other clerical work, but was soon thrown into their finance area when someone else was let go. I thought, “Really? You want me, a teenager, dealing with your money stuff?” As it turns out, someone had good instincts, because I was actually really good at it. Slowly I was taught more in that area and took on more responsibility. In the meantime, they would also plug me into other areas of the business when someone got sick or quit. This gave me a good understanding on the different departments of a business, how they all work together, and how changes in one area can affect the whole organization.

Around the time I was 21 I decided to no longer pursue music and work at the company full time. I was made the head of my division and given a massive project to bring the company into the 21st century and make them paperless. This started in my finance area, but really was a project that impacted the entire business. Again, this project taught me how one thing can affect each different area of one business. I had people from different departments coming to me with requests and demands to make their jobs easier with the software I was implementing, but ultimately it was up to me to decide what changes were going to benefit the company as a whole.

In 2017, my dad decided he wanted to start helping more business owners outside of dentistry, so along with my brother Neil, we formed Matterhorn Business Development. In the last few years, I’ve been able to take my real-life experience in business, apprentice under my father with his 40+ years in business, and help business owners solve issues in their business, grow their revenue, and increase their take-home pay.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Certainly not! In July of 2021, my father suddenly and very unexpectedly passed away. Not only was this crushing because he was my father and I was extremely close to him, but this was also my mentor and someone I planned to continue being in business with for many more years. When he passed, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do because I felt my career completely depended on him and his credibility. Ultimately, my brother and I decided we needed to keep his legacy alive by keeping Matterhorn Business Development going.

In the last 7 or so months, I’ve had to quickly adapt and learn how to stand on my own two feet, close my own clients and trust that I can get the same results for my clients that I was getting while working with my dad. On top of that, I also found out I was pregnant! I’m so excited to start a family, but being pregnant for the first time while also navigating this new path certainly has been challenging. I’m so grateful for my awesome clients and the many people around me supporting me on this new journey! And I’m happy to say I’ve been able to keep the business going and keep getting results for our clients.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Here at Matterhorn Business Development, we focus on two main things for business owners: helping them get organized so they can increase their revenue, and helping them manage their cash flow and maximize profitability so expenses aren’t increasing at the same rate as growth.

I’m certified in a system called Profit First and use this system to make sure my clients are profitable, paying themselves consistently, paying taxes with no problem, and aren’t overspending. Before implementing Profit First, we would hear clients say “Yeah, my revenue increased, but I still don’t have any money.” That’s not right! Now, with Profit First, my clients are able to consistently take-home profit distributions and pay, while also keeping the expenses in check within the business.

To help focus on growth, we use principles from my father’s book, Fun at Work. We help our clients create custom strategic plans that address the specific issues their business is facing. This is not a cookie-cutter plan we give to every client, but something we work to create together that addresses their specific needs. From there, we follow up and make sure the new plans and changes are going smoothly while giving personal feedback and advice to help them navigate the ever-changing terrain of their business.

Our motto here is “If you know us, you win” because we make sure every person we come into contact with is winning and achieving their goals. We also make sure to have FUN in everything we do. You can very much expect to crack some jokes and have some laughs while we are diving deep into a business’s issues.

We do all of the above by either working one-on-one with clients or in our group coaching program called Adventure to Profit. We also are very active on our YouTube channel where we recently passed 1,000,000 views!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I think most people are surprised when they hear about my “rockstar” background. I have blue and purple in my hair and am very creative, but also am very much analytical and business-minded. People who only know me in a business setting don’t usually know about my creative side!
