MATTE shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
MATTE, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: Have you stood up for someone when it cost you something?
I had a solider young guy just came from LA and as I was processing him into our unit and getting him acclimated to active duty lifestyle, I receive a phone call from a “Lieutenant Colonel” and tried to make it seem like he was talking to an underage girl or while she was underage but it was false information and was not accurate. So I had to defend him with the thoughts of retaliation from someone in charge of me.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m MATTE, an independent artist and creative entrepreneur blending hip-hop, rock, and alternative influences to tell real stories rooted in experience, pressure, and growth. My music is raw and cinematic, built on honesty, emotion, and energy rather than trends, pulling from both the grit of street narratives and the vulnerability of personal reflection.
Beyond the music, I’m intentional about building a brand that stands for ownership, independence, and longevity. Everything I release is part of a bigger picture: creating art that connects deeply while laying the foundation for a sustainable creative career. Whether it’s through visuals, live performances, or recorded projects, my goal is to make people feel something real and leave with a piece of the story.
Right now, I’m focused on consistently releasing new music, expanding my audience, and continuing to evolve sonically and visually always pushing forward, and always staying true to the message.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Elementary school I knew I had a gift. I was always the popular kid but I was friends with everyone and it didn’t matter what you did or who you were. I’ve been on stages since elementary school. That drew people towards me, people have been sharing their life stories with me from the early high school ages.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes 2022 was the worst beginning of the year in my life. I almost gave up on it all. The only thing that got me through it was my kids and my parents. I exited the Army around 2021 started chasing my dreams with music then life turned upside down, I moved to Florida early 2022 and that’s when my life started to get better. One wrong decision on a lonely day in 2022 could have changed more than just my life but my family and kids would have suffered as well.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My kids mean the world to me. I do everything I can to be the best father. My friends constantly tell me I’m killing it with parenting. I pride myself on my fatherly abilities. I show them that you can still chase your dreams no matter how old you are.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
That I was solid. You can’t find that to much anymore. I keep it 1000 with everyone regardless of emotion.
