Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Strenk.
Hi Steven, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story begins in the cold winters of Buffalo, New York. I discovered my passion for art in high school, though I wasn’t entirely sure where it would take me. Despite the uncertainty, I applied to Ringling College of Art and Design. When the acceptance letter arrived, it felt like the sign I’d been waiting for, not only confirming my path, but giving me the perfect reason to trade snow for sunshine and fully commit to my creative journey.
The road from there has been a mix of passion, persistence, and continuous growth. I started with a love for art and a willingness to learn, saying yes to opportunities that challenged me and surrounding myself with people who inspired me. There were, of course, setbacks along the way—but each one taught me something valuable and helped me refine my direction.
Over time, I began to carve out my own path rather than follow anyone else’s. I gained clarity, confidence, and a deeper connection to my work. Today, I’m proud of how far I’ve come and I’m still evolving, learning, and staying open to what comes next.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road—it has definitely come with its fair share of challenges. There were moments when things didn’t go as planned, and like most artists periods of self-doubt. Whether it was limited resources, learning through trial and error, or simply pushing through those setbacks, each obstacle taught me something valuable about myself. What has kept me going is my family. They keep me grounded. My family’s foundation has always been a soft landing point when I am faced with obstacles and need nonjudgemental support. Looking back, those struggles helped shape my resilience and gave me a deeper appreciation for how far I’ve come.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My work as an artist is deeply influenced by my connection to nature—both in stillness and in motion. I work primarily with acrylic paint and mixed media sculpture, drawing inspiration from time spent walking through forests and surfing along the coast.
My acrylic paintings tend to focus on organic forms, textures, and colors found in nature, whether it’s the layered greens of the forest floor or the shifting blues and golds of the ocean at sunrise. I love how acrylics allow me to build texture and depth, trying to mimic the complexity of the natural world. In sculpture, I work with earthy, tactile materials to create figurative forms that feel almost discovered.
What I’m most proud of is how my art creates space—for reflection, stillness, and emotional connection. Whether someone is drawn to a painting or a sculpture, I want them to feel something that lingers.
What sets me apart is this blend of natural influence and emotional storytelling—interpreting the world not just as it is, but how it feels. My work isn’t just about what I see in nature, but how it shapes me—and in turn, how I translate that into pieces that invite others into that same dialogue.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned along my journey is to trust the process—even when the path isn’t clear. As an artist, it’s easy to get caught up in doubt, comparison, or the pressure to have everything figured out. But over time, I’ve realized that growth often happens in the in-between moments—the quiet phases, the setbacks, the experiments that didn’t quite work out.
I’ve learned that creativity isn’t about perfection; it’s about staying open, being present, and allowing yourself to evolve. The more I’ve leaned into curiosity instead of fear, the more honest and meaningful my work has become. That lesson has not only shaped my art, but also how I approach life.
