Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Whale Feral

We recently had the chance to connect with Whale Feral and have shared our conversation below.

Whale, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
The quest of man is to build. We have a tangled mass of cables we have been constructing. No one gets to see it because it is a form of deeply personal expression. Art for the sake of art.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
We are an improvisational rock n roll band founded in Gainesville. We also have deep ties to the Tampa Bay Area as three of our members went to Plant High School together. For the past five years we have loved being back home in Tampa. We recently put out the record ‘Words We Can’t Read” an ode to our illiteracy. Deluxe edition coming soone.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Community builds bonds in a world constantly trying to tear people apart. Live music is a great source of that community. One of our favorite things is old friends and new friends coming together at shows.

What’s something you changed your mind about after failing hard?
Failure itself. With all the improvisation we do on stage, nothing is ever going to be perfect. Those “failures” are simply a springboard to new musical ideas we would not have found otherwise. As the great Keith Richards says, “Find the mistake to follow.” If every failure is an opportunity, failure becomes something to embrace. Which is great because we fail a lot.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
A commitment to helping each other bring our ideas to life. Some of these songs have been with us ten years, some of them have been with us for two. With this new album and the deluxe edition, we get to show two different sides of each song. Everything from delicate acoustic studio tracks to full-tilt rock and roll. It is important to us that our songs grow and evolve as we grow and evolve with our community.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
On the stage. This whole thing started because we love making music with our friends. There is no feeling like bouncing ideas off one another, following the musical conversation on whatever journey it takes us. Live performance has always been at the forefront of what we do. Any time we get to spend immersed in that is a blessing.
