Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Lucie Motherway

We recently had the chance to connect with Lucie Motherway and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Lucie, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
People often think I simply “make pretty accessories,” but Lavlii is so much deeper than that. My pieces aren’t fashion items—they are emotional heirlooms. Every crown or headpiece carries months of thought, craftsmanship, and intention. They’re not mass-produced; they’re sculpted, wired, woven, plated, and built by hand, one element at a time.

Another misconception is how much customization goes into each piece. I’m not picking items off a shelf; I’m designing around a woman’s personality, her gown, her energy, her story. Sometimes brides cry when they see their custom piece, and not because it’s sparkly—but because it feels like them. That level of connection doesn’t happen accidentally.

Even now, with collaborations, press recognition, and international clients, I’m still hands-on with every order. And I think that surprises people—that a luxury brand can still be personal, intimate, and human.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Lucie Motherway, and I am the founder and designer behind Lavlii, a luxury brand specializing in handcrafted headpieces and jewelry. Every piece I create is built with intention, emotion, and an eye for detail, using elements such as Austrian crystals, freshwater pearls, handmade porcelain and clay flowers, and vintage-inspired materials. My work blends old-world craftsmanship with a modern sense of femininity, giving each design the feeling of a personal heirloom.

Lavlii began as a small creative outlet and has grown into a brand trusted by brides, stylists, and women across the world who want something meaningful, artistic, and beautifully made. What makes my brand unique is the level of personalization and care behind each piece — I design around a woman’s personality, her gown, the atmosphere of her event, and the emotion she wants to feel when she puts it on. I work closely with every client, whether it’s a custom bridal crown, a delicate headband, or a statement piece for a special occasion.

I frequently collaborate with Monica’s Bridal Boutique and Scout and Molly’s LW in Sarasota and boutiques New York, where clients can see and try pieces in person, and I host private fittings and events where customers can explore custom designs. I also create larger, one-of-a-kind couture crowns for editorial shoots, bridal campaigns, and special features — including pieces that have been worn on television and published across multiple platforms.

Right now, I am expanding Lavlii’s bridal collections, developing more custom offerings, and preparing for upcoming features, events, and creative partnerships. My goal is to continue building a brand that feels personal, artistic, and timeless — a place where women can find pieces that reflect who they are and who they want to be on some of the most meaningful days of their lives.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
A moment that really shaped how I see the world happened when I realized how quickly life can change, and how little control we truly have over anything except our own effort. I grew up in an environment where nothing was guaranteed, so if I wanted something, I learned to create it myself. That early self-reliance taught me resilience, attention to detail, and the belief that beauty and stability are things we build, not things we’re given.

That mindset later became the foundation of Lavlii—creating pieces with intention, meaning, and craftsmanship that last. It shaped the way I work, the way I see people, and the way I move through life: with independence, purpose, and the understanding that what you build with your hands and your heart can’t be taken away.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me clarity. It taught me who I am when everything familiar falls away. In moments of struggle, you can’t rely on comfort or momentum—you rely only on yourself. That’s where you discover your backbone, your instincts, and what truly matters. Success feels wonderful, but it doesn’t shape you. Hard moments do. They taught me discipline, resilience, and the ability to rebuild from nothing. Those lessons became the foundation of my work ethic and the reason Lavlii exists in the way it does today.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief you used to hold tightly but now think was naive or wrong?
I used to believe that hard work alone guarantees success. Over time, I learned that timing, strategy, boundaries, and choosing the right people around you matter just as much. Working hard is important, but working wisely is transformative. Letting go of that old belief helped me protect my energy, choose better collaborations, and grow Lavlii in a way that feels sustainable instead of draining.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I understand that beauty is emotional. Most people think beauty is about visual perfection, symmetry, or sparkle. But the deepest form of beauty comes from meaning — why something was made, who it was made for, and what moment it will live in. When a piece reflects someone’s identity, their style, and the energy they want to embody, it becomes more than an accessory. Beauty is powerful when it feels personal, not just decorative. That is something I work into every design.
