GWAK shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
GWAK, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
About a month ago, I was driving across the state to pick up a piece of equipment for artwork and I saw someone run a red light and T-bone a car, causing it to flip over. I immediately jumped into action and raced over to the upside down car. There was gas pouring out, and the scene was chaotic. The door was jammed closed from the damage so I had to kick the already broken window open enough to help the woman out of her car. She obviously was shaken up, but was clearly OK when she stood up straight to thank me for helping her she looked at me, puzzled, and said GWAK??? What a weird moment to be spotted in the wild
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
my name is GWAK I am an oversized pop culture sculptor. I make props products and Art for major brands, YouTubers and the general art collectors. I’ve been professionally doing art for about two years now, and my brand is focused heavily on having a lighthearted, fun spirit, not taking anything too serious and enjoying where I am in life and trying to put out the best freaking piece of art you’ve ever seen. A big part of what I do is I help brands come up with new merch or new products. Along with content creating. I do a lot of work with CMO‘s.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I almost died, a few years ago I started having these bizarre symptoms. Every day I’d wake up with a new issue, nausea or head, cold or bodyaches every day with something new it lasted for about a month. I eventually started having seizures. And it got to the point where anything I ate would not stay down so I starving I went two weeks of not eating any food. And then, miraculously it completely went away. Turns out it was resin poisoning from doing artwork, not wearing the proper safety equipment. But in that moment, I realized I wasted my life, focusing so heavily on working hard. Kind of like a midlife crisis I decided to not be so focused on building wealth but more focused on enjoying life. It brought me back to what I enjoyed about life and I’ve never been as happy as I am now I see a lot of people more focused on the wrong thing and they put their happiness aside. I’ll never do that again.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
I was raised in a cult at a young age. The leader of the group believed he was receiving messages from extraterrestrials. He was very convincing. I was part of this group until I was 13 where I was finally able to break free from. I don’t remember a lot from being a part of the organization, but what it taught me is you can find community and good people even in dark places. And sometimes people need something to believe in to have purpose
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
Hands down Danny Duncan the YouTuber. He was born into a poor family and was able to rise above it. The odds were stacked against them and he still won. I see that and myself nothing is handed. Everything is earned. He’s able to focus on the good. He’s able to encourage people to be their best self
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. How do you know when you’re out of your depth?
I’m always out of my depth. I’m pushing way beyond my capabilities. Every day is something new every day is a challenge. I am wildly dyslexic, and on the spectrum. Someone like me should not be pushing at the level that I’m pushing the amount of failure I have is high, but I keep pushing knowing the deeper I go the bigger the wave.
