Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Dr. Aixa E. Fretts Mulero of Northwest Tampa

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dr. Aixa E. Fretts Mulero . Check out our conversation below.

Hi Aixa E., thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A typical day for me is a balance between my professional work and my role as a mother. I spend part of my day providing psychological services and managing my own practice, which includes client sessions, documentation, and administrative responsibilities. At the same time, I dedicate a significant portion of my day to caring for my 15-month-old baby, organizing our routine, and being fully present during this important stage of development. My days are busy but very fulfilling, as they combine professional purpose with family life.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am a Doctor of Psychology and the founder of Bilingual Counseling of Florida, LLC, a practice focused on providing culturally responsive and client-centered mental health care. My work centers on supporting individuals and families through life transitions, emotional challenges, and personal growth. Alongside my professional role, I am also a mother, which has deeply shaped my perspective on balance, resilience, and intentional living. My story reflects the intersection of professional purpose, entrepreneurship, and family life.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
My earliest memory of truly feeling powerful was when I became a mother. In that moment, I found myself stepping into multiple roles at once—mother, wife, psychologist, business owner, and caregiver of my home. Learning to navigate these responsibilities simultaneously required resilience, adaptability, and a deep sense of purpose. That experience reshaped my understanding of strength and showed me that power can come from responsibility, commitment, and the ability to lead with both compassion and determination.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
I stopped hiding my pain when I realized that acknowledging it did not make me weaker, but stronger and more self-aware. As I simultaneously embraced my roles as a mother, wife, professional, and entrepreneur, I learned to face my own limits, ask for support when needed, and transform personal challenges into clarity and purpose. Over time, I stopped seeing those experiences as something to hide and began using them as a source of strength that enhances my leadership, deepens my empathy, and guides my work with authenticity.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
A cultural value I protect at all costs is the importance of family and human connection. I strongly believe in maintaining close relationships, mutual respect, and emotional presence, even in the midst of professional demands. This value shapes how I lead, how I serve others, and how I make decisions—ensuring that success is never pursued at the expense of integrity, compassion, or meaningful relationships.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I am doing what I was born to do. As a psychologist, my work is an extension of who I am listening deeply, leading with empathy, and understanding human behavior in a meaningful way. While there were expectations along the way, I chose a path that aligns with my values and purpose. My work allows me to support, guide, and connect with others through empathy and understanding, and that alignment is what reassures me that I am on the right path.
