Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with DANIELLE ARMSTRONG of St. Petersburg

We’re looking forward to introducing you to DANIELLE ARMSTRONG. Check out our conversation below.

DANIELLE, so good to connect and we’re excited to share your story and insights with our audience. There’s a ton to learn from your story, but let’s start with a warm up before we get into the heart of the interview. What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
My mornings always start with walking my beloved mini poodle, who also happens to be the Chief Tasting Officer at Decadent & Dainty. We’ll head to the St. Pete Pier or stroll around Vinoy Park, and of course there are plenty of treat breaks along the way. It’s the perfect start because it gets me moving, clears my head, and gives me a little dose of joy before the workday begins. Once we’re back, I usually enjoy a cup of coffee and get organized for the day—checking on orders, sketches, or any creative projects I’m working on.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Danielle, the founder and creative heart behind Decadent & Dainty. My journey here has been anything but ordinary—I spent years as a hardworking corporate gal, but I realized my spark was fading. The turning point came during a visit with my dad, who’s bravely battling late-stage dementia. That experience completely reshaped how I see life and inspired me to finally chase the dreams that had been tugging at my heart for years: art and pastries.

With a background in culinary school, time spent learning from the legendary French Chef Roland Mesnier, and my degree from the University of Maryland, I decided to bring it all together and create something truly unique. In the spring of 2024, Decadent & Dainty was born.

What makes it special is that it’s not just about cupcakes—it’s about creating edible works of art that bring joy and beauty to everyday life. My signature pieces are hand-piped floral cupcake bouquets and centerpieces, each one designed to be both decadent and dainty. I love blending artistry and flavor in a way that surprises people and makes them smile.

At the heart of it all, Decadent & Dainty is about celebrating life’s moments—big or small—with something memorable, meaningful, and a little magical.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
One of the most defining moments for me happened in the winter of 2024, on the day my father was leaving after a visit. He’s been courageously battling late-stage dementia, and for a brief minute before he left, he remembered who I was. He looked at me and simply asked, ‘How have you been?’

I knew that moment was fleeting, so I immediately hugged him and told him how much I loved him. It was such a small exchange, but it carried so much weight. After his visit, I realized I needed to make him proud. He had invested in my culinary education, and in that instant, I knew I couldn’t keep putting my dreams on hold. That was the moment I decided to take a chance on myself, and it completely reshaped how I see the world. Life is precious and fleeting, and the best way we can honor it is by pouring our hearts into what truly matters.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely—starting a business in today’s economy comes with challenges that can feel overwhelming at times. There have been moments where the uncertainty, long hours, and constant juggling of creativity and logistics made me wonder if I had taken on too much. Like many small business owners, I’ve faced those quiet moments of doubt where giving up seemed easier than pushing forward.

But what always pulls me through is remembering why I started Decadent & Dainty in the first place. This isn’t just a business to me—it’s a way to honor my father, to share beauty and joy with others, and to build something that truly reflects my passion. Every time a customer lights up when they see one of my cupcake bouquets or I hear how meaningful a delivery was, it reaffirms that the struggle is worth it. Those moments keep me going.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friends would probably say that what matters most to me is happiness—not just my own, but creating it for others too. They know how much I value the little things that bring joy to life. They’d also say my husband and my beloved poodle, Winston, are at the very center of my world. Those two are my constants, my daily source of laughter, love, and grounding.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
I don’t think I’ll have regrets, because I’m really proud of myself for taking the leap. Walking away from a stable, good job wasn’t easy, but I knew I had to take a chance on myself and my dreams. No matter what, I’ll always be able to say I went for it—and that’s something I’ll never regret.
