Today we’d like to introduce you to Susana Lozada-Murray.
Hi Susana, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico where I grew up right until I completed my bachelor’s degree at the University of Puerto Rico. I was fortunate enough to attend a bilingual school where I learned English at a very young age. A big part of my childhood was spent dancing. I was trained in classical ballet, jazz, and, modern until I traded my dance shoes for books in college.
My educational and training background includes earning a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Puerto Rico and a Master’s and a Doctor of Psychology degree from the Florida School of Professional Psychology. My training experiences include working in a variety of treatment settings, including private practices, a college counseling center, forensic settings, an inpatient hospital and a public school district. I completed my internship at Northeast Florida State Hospital, where I began gaining experience in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and working with severe mental illness. During my post-doctoral fellowship at Hillsborough County Public Schools, I had the opportunity to work with children from a variety of backgrounds.
Currently, I am a Florida and New York-licensed psychologist trained in working with many types of mental health issues. I am also part of the Psychology Interjurisdictional Compact (PSYPACT) which is an interstate compact designed to facilitate the practice of telepsychology and the temporary in-person, face-to-face practice of psychology across state boundaries. My expertise has been in treating and performing evaluations for depression, anxiety, learning disabilities, ADHD, and personality disorders. Using a combination of solution-focused therapies, supportive therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), I conduct individual therapy for adolescents and adults. I am also a Qualified Supervisor credentialed to oversee and mentor less experienced individuals in our field of psychology.
My expertise and main area of interest focuses on performing evaluations pertaining to immigration issues. I have a passion for working with the Latino population, and I often collaborate with immigration attorneys in the Tampa Bay area to provide services to this underserved population.
Since 2018, I have been working with professional baseball players in my private practice addressing issues such as depression, panic attacks, and performance anxiety. In 2023, I joined the New York Yankees staff as a Team Psychologist to continue working with baseball players and as a consultant to the Yankees staff. In my free time, I enjoy the company of family and friends, running, skiing, and rooting for my children playing baseball. I have a 10-year old and 13-year old boys that keep me very active. I am also very involved in my children’s little league and I serve as an executive board member for Keystone Little League.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I think most people’s journeys are not flawless and have struggles. Struggles that have stood out to me have been my move to US and adapting to adulthood in a new place. Navigating parenthood while also trying to build my practice has also been challenging but very gratifying.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dr. Susana Lozada-Murray & Associates?
My practice offers therapy services and psychological evaluations for a wide variety of mental health reasons. We are one of the few practices that conducts all psychological services in either English and/or Spanish. I specialize in evaluations pertaining to immigration issues.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
One of the things that helped me out to the most throughout my entire career has been fostering and maintaining connections with people. I always made sure to stay in contact with former supervisors, colleagues and mentors and I am not shy to reach out whenever I need to collaborate with someone else.
