Inspiring Conversations with Ryan Parmeter of The Wrestling Lab

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Parmeter.

Hi Ryan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I was born in Grand Rapids Michigan in a little town called Sparta. Growing up I always had an infatuation for football and professional wrestling. When I was interviewed in kindergarten for my school I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up and my exact words were Professional Football player or Professional Wrestler. They then asked me if I wanted to do it for the money or the fame…LOL…I told them for the money…LOL. As the years went on wrestling grew on me even more. My family and I were very much fans of professional wrestling. I use to watch it with my grandfather Elijah Parmeter. He was a big influence on why I started watching it. Then we would have big get-togethers with my family and we would always order the pay-per-views and watch them to root on our favorite wrestler. At times there would be fights (Physically and verbally), but it was always resolved. Just a great time looking back at it. It wasn’t until around 1998 when I first started to figure out I wanted to get into wrestling. I mean the industry was hot at that time. You had the Rock, Stone Cold, The Undertaker, Kane, HHH… Wrestling was booming back then! So, one day I was called to help a buddy of mine out for a couple extra dollars. I needed the money, so it was a no-brainer for me. Little did I know the man’s house I was working on was someone I always loved growing up as a kid. It was Sargent Slaughters place and when he came out my mouth dropped to the ground. I honestly didn’t care that he was a famous wrestler, but he was one of my childhood heroes because of the cartoon G.I. Joe. I introduced myself to him and just started to ask him questions. Sergeant Slaughter looked at me and asked “Ever think about becoming a professional wrestler”? From there it evolved into him explaining how to get into it and me just doing exactly that. Finding a school by someone with credibility and getting on shows. From there I was eventually signed by WWE in 2005 and my life has never been the same since the rest was history!!! And now having a school with Jamar Shipman (Jay Lethal) and David Mercury I help young men and women make their dreams become a reality at The Wrestling Lab. A premier professional wrestling school” where we have over 60 plus young men and women trying to live, accomplish and reach their goals of becoming a professional in this industry.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely was not a smooth road. Incredible journey… yes!!!, but smooth…not even close lol. I think anyone that is passionate and love what they do for a living you are always trying to find ways to be better and to grow. There were a lot of things missed or sacrificed in life to become better, because you’re always training in the ring or at the gym, camera work, promos learning tag lines or move sets, or just doing tape studying or reviews to perfect your craft! Looking back now I can truly say I absolutely enjoyed the journey and say I absolutely had NOTHING handed to me, but I absolutely have no regrets or what-ifs since being in the wrestling industry and I will always continue to teach our young men and women or whoever I come across in this industry the importance of never going to bed saying “What if” and to always reach for the stars no matter what. This is what makes me appreciate how far I have come and what I have accomplished so far in this lifetime!! And now to be able to give back to my students or younger generation in this business makes it that much more gratifying.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Wrestling Lab?
What I specialize in is helping young men and women that dream of becoming a professional wrestler to understand and learn the proper way to make it to the top in this industry. To make them be the best product for themselves and to make sure they understand and help he/she brand themselves properly. To have them ready and prepared for when the day comes where he or she is over prepared to be a success in this business and more importantly to let them be their best selfs. More importantly!!! T.V. Ready!!! To have them physically and mentally prepared for that lime light!!! And to make sure they have the tools for success to grow and be the biggest star that he/she can be!!! It’s all about putting that work in!

What makes you happy?
What makes me most happy is without a doubt being with my family, my wife (Kristin and my son Elijah), but when it comes specifically to my industry that i grew up in it is watching these young men and women evolve and grow in this industry and become successful. You see their attitude change with their heads held high and you see the self confidence that comes across them… It’s like they are coming into themselves. And some of the best gratification is of course when they thank you. I know I’m just a small piece in their life, but I’m happy, humble and great full if i can make a difference and it makes me so happy to see them succeed and become his or her best self. I’m a parent and I feel like I have 60+ Children, so all you want is for them to grow up successful and happy, so I am always smiling when I am around them or see them succeed!
