Inspiring Conversations with Crystal Canela of Skin Palace & Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Canela.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I began my journey in esthetics school in 2016, where I quickly fell in love with corrective skincare. Shortly after graduating, I secured my first position working under a plastic surgeon, performing microneedling, laser treatments, and advanced skincare procedures. That experience immersed me in the medical aesthetics world early on and gave me a significant advantage as I built my foundation in the industry.

Over the years, I continued refining my craft in high-end spas while simultaneously attending nursing school. The combination of hands-on aesthetic experience and a science-based education deepened my understanding of skin physiology, ingredients, and treatment protocols. Although I ultimately chose not to sit for the NCLEX or pursue a nursing career, the clinical education profoundly shaped the way I approach skincare and client care today.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I pivoted and launched an e-commerce business offering curated skincare products, tools, and virtual consultations. Through that season, I realized I had cultivated a loyal clientele who deeply trusted my expertise. With their support, I transitioned into opening my own solo practice and steadily grew through referrals and intentional networking rather than traditional advertising.

As demand increased, I expanded into a 1,200-square-foot space with multiple treatment rooms — a clean, all-white concept that reflected my brand’s elevated yet welcoming aesthetic. During my postpartum season, while also growing my family, I introduced the first head spa in my city — a decision that transformed my business and further positioned it as a unique wellness destination.

The rest, as they say, is history

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There were definitely struggles along the way — and many lessons, detours, and moments of trial and error. Early in my career, working under surgeons and in various spa environments, I observed both strong and weak leadership. Experiencing a lack of mentorship and navigating difficult workplace dynamics shaped me profoundly. I made a promise to myself that if I ever built my own business, I would lead differently — with integrity, professionalism, and genuine support for my team.

Like many women in this industry, I also faced challenging workplace environments and moments that tested my confidence. Ultimately, those experiences strengthened my desire to create something of my own — a space rooted in respect, growth, and high standards.

Another major challenge was the discipline required to continually invest in myself. Advanced education, certifications, and professional development came at a significant financial and personal cost. There were many late nights — often sleep-deprived — balancing motherhood, marriage, school, and entrepreneurship all at once. It required sacrifice, resilience, and unwavering belief in my long-term vision.

Looking back, every obstacle refined me. The setbacks taught me leadership. The exhaustion built endurance. And the risks I took in investing in myself have been some of the most rewarding decisions of my career. In the end, every challenge played a role in shaping the business and the woman I am today

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
This business was originally a vision I began bringing to life in 2014, when I became a certified Classical Pilates instructor. Growing up in New York City, I was always drawn to spa-like environments — peaceful spaces that offered an escape from the intensity and pace of city life. Wellness, to me, was never just a luxury; it was a necessity.

After becoming certified, I taught Pilates in studios throughout the tri-state area. I quickly noticed that the women attending these classes were deeply invested in their health, beauty, and overall well-being — long before Pilates became the mainstream movement it is today. At the time, many of my clients were sophisticated, health-conscious women who valued longevity and self-care. I built meaningful relationships with them and learned so much about lifestyle, discipline, and elevated living.

Shortly after, I relocated to Palm Beach, Florida, where I attended esthetics school. It was there that my long-term vision became clear: I didn’t just want to offer one service — I wanted to create a wellness center that integrated movement, skin health, and holistic treatments under one roof.

Today, my practice offers a full, thoughtfully curated menu. We specialize in microneedling and have a medical director specifically for that service which is collagen induction therapy that naturally stimulates skin rejuvenation without surgery. Beyond that, we offer several types of customized facials tailored to all skin concerns, from acne and hyperpigmentation to aging and barrier repair.

As the owner I am known as a microneedling specialist and for delivering transformative, results-driven treatments that enhance skin health in a natural and sustainable way. But skincare is just one piece of the bigger picture.

Our wellness offerings also include head spa treatments, which I proudly introduced as the first of their kind in our city back in the beginning of 2024. These treatments focus on scalp health, relaxation, and nervous system regulation, using organic products and botanical herbs to nourish the scalp and hair while creating a deeply restorative experience. Our staff is extensively trained and knowledgeable in customizing each treatment per clients needs.

In addition to skin and scalp therapies, we provide body sculpting and slimming treatments, as well as beauty services such as lash lifts, brow lamination, and permanent makeup — allowing our clients to feel polished and confident in a natural, effortless way.

What truly sets us apart is our integrative philosophy. We approach beauty from the inside out. We incorporate organic elements, botanical herbs, and holistic principles while maintaining a strong foundation in science and corrective aesthetics. We are also expanding to include advanced Cadillac Pilates and nutrition support, because movement, nourishment, skin health, and overall vitality are deeply connected.

While the business is thriving today, it is still only the beginning. My long-term vision is to expand into a larger wellness center that fosters not just services, but community — a space where women feel supported, educated, restored, and empowered in every season of life.

As someone who has personally walked through intense seasons of growth, including balancing motherhood, education, entrepreneurship, and my own health journey, I approach my clients with empathy and intention. My brand is built on trust. Most of my growth has come through referrals and relationships, which speaks volumes about the loyalty and confidence my clients have in my work.

Brand-wise, I am most proud that my space feels elevated yet welcoming — clinical yet calming — luxurious but grounded. Every detail is intentional.

Every service is customized. And every client is treated as an individual, not a transaction.

This is more than a spa. It is a modern wellness sanctuary built on intention, expertise, and genuine care ✨ ☺️

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I’m going to sound like a dork for this but I love reading new studies on pubmed journal of science website, but I genuinely love reading new clinical studies and staying up to date on emerging research which allows me to continually refine my approach and ensure that what I’m offering clients is both innovative and evidence-based.

Outside of research journals, I also enjoy books and podcasts centered around wellness, longevity, personal growth, and entrepreneurship. I’m drawn to conversations that challenge conventional thinking while still being grounded in science. For me, learning is part of my self-care, it keeps me inspired, sharp, and evolving.
