Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Lopez.
Hi Mia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am the owner and Lead Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) at Applied Behavioral Innovations, LLC. I am originally from Indiana where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Development from Purdue University in 2014. While pursuing my career options I experienced my first ABA clinic and after a few short months, realized this was the career path I wanted to focus on. Just a few short years later, I received her Master of Arts in Applied Behavior Analysis with an emphasis on Autism Spectrum Disorders from Ball State University in 2016. I have been providing ABA services for about six years but have been working with children with Autism and other developmental disabilities for over 14 years. I have provided ABA services in a variety of settings such as: clinic, home based, community, and school.
After working in a variety of different settings and areas of ABA, I was able to find what areas i was most passionate about. Ever since my first ABA experience, I knew I always wanted my agency. So what started as a dream turned into my reality. After doing years of researching and reaching out to different BCBAs I set my dream in motion and started my LLC. My agency was founded on the principles of teaching in a variety of settings. My main focus is to work with families, collaborating with other professionals in each child’s life, and promote independence. All while providing quality and effective therapy. All while striving to stay current and up to date with the latest ABA research.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The only real obstacles/challenges that i have faced has been learning the business and marketing side to being a business owner.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Applied Behavioral Innovations, LLC?
Applied Behavioral Innovations, LLC provides Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) Therapy to kids and young adults on the Autism Spectrum. ABA is a therapy-based intervention that is based on the science of learning and creates an environment to promote positive behavior change. ABA is an evidence-based practice that is the most renowned and accepted therapy for treating individuals on the Autism Spectrum. It is effective, safe, and has the evidence to support these practices. ABA not only focuses on decreasing problematic behaviors that are harmful or disruptive to learning. ABA also focuses on increasing language and communication skills; improve attention and memory, social skills, academics, and most importantly promoting independence. ABA can be applied to all environmental settings: in home, school, and/or in the community. School sessions are designed for the child to be successful in an academic setting with their peers.
We provide 1:1 support to help your child meet their academic, social and behavioral goals all while promoting independence. During home sessions, we work 1:1 with the child in home for an approved number of hours per week. An extensive assessment of the child’s current strengths and skill levels will be conducted in order to establish appropriate goals and intervention strategies. All programs are individualized based on the child’s needs and the needs of family. Home sessions are designed to be naturalistic and may work on several different skills. Home sessions will often incorporate parent trainings on a bi-weekly basis. Community sessions are designed to work on the many different skills that may come up in your daily lives. For example, maybe you would like to work on restaurant skills, taking a trip to the grocery store, or the park. ABA can be applied in your family’s day-to-day lives. These are just some of the areas ABA is applied. We also work on social skills, job skills, daily living skills, and so much more.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc.?
I do enjoy listening to a few different ABA podcasts. But where I gain most of my ABA knowledge is through different peer review journal articles. Every child we work with is different and not every intervention we apply is the same. So, we need to do extensive research on the most up to date, appropriate, and effective interventions. ABA is constantly changing and new interventions are emerging daily. If there is something specific that I am interested in learning about then I like to attend different workshops or conferences specific to that area. I also like to take continuing educations courses (CEUs). And of course I will also refer back to my grad. school text books.
