Today we’d like to introduce you to Damali Fils.
Damali, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started styling hair at the age of 14 at my mom’s house: I would style family and friend’s hair. Which then was my way of advertisement without even trying. I would often accompany my aunts to the local hair salon, where I learned a great deal about hairstyling. After high school, I attended the University of South Florida, where I continued to style hair as a hobby. There I earned a degree in Business Management and a minor in Leadership Studies. Upon graduating, I then finally attend hair school at Paul Mitchell, the School Tampa. In the many years that I’ve worked In The beauty industry, I have had the chance to work in several areas: from salon ownership to styling celebrities in New York. For a little over three years of my career, I was a Traveling hairstylist, traveling in between Florida, New York, and California.
With all of the traveling and inquiries that I received from another stylist in regards to how I was able to be a traveling stylist, I wrote and published a book, Travel Notice: The ultimate guide to becoming a traveling hairstylist. After many years of styling hair, in 2019, I decided to help other stylists achieve their beauty dreams with my Business, Stylists in Business. I have helped hundreds of hairstylists with business resources to run successful Businesses through my Etsy store, podcast, and membership.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has never been a smooth road. It’s actually been quite tough from building a clientele multiple times, finding the right salon to work in, learning the latest technique or staying motivated in such a saturated field. But I always remember back to when I only did it for the fun and creativity and not just as a means to pay bills. The struggles kept me on my toes and made me a better hairstylist and business owner.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about?
Stylists in Business started as an Etsy store and has now branched into a membership to assist hair stylists in building and sustaining successful beauty businesses. We help hair styling prepare their Business with online resources, mentorship, and guidance.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love that the Tampa Bay Area is growing. In the years that I have lived in the area from Tampa to Sarasota, I have seen an of growth. From new businesses starting to areas being built up. But with growth also comes more people, which means more traffic, now that I don’t believe anyone likes it.
