Hi Tyrone, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
During my years as a Lieutenant with the Baltimore City Fire Department, I had responded to and have seen and been a part of many emergencies and events that can be bothersome to one’s mental state. Knowing this, I volunteered to become a member of the BCFD Stress Management Team. This team responded to and assisted the members in many on-the-scene stressful situations and calls. Many of the calls that we responded to with the team were to help the members who had experienced and seen situations that could result in stress, anger, PTSD, or more. Although I enjoyed my career in the BCFD and with the Stress Management Team, I wanted to help others.
I began helping my friends, family, and many older and younger firefighters with their problems, situations, and concerns. In helping them, I started seeing a difference in them that made them and their situations better.
As time went on, many of my friends suggested me becoming a Counselor or a Life Coach. As I looked into Coaching and my retirement from the Fire Department, I knew that I wanted to continue helping others. Not in my usual field with saving lives physically, but in another way that will do more of prevention and growth.
As a Life/Personal Development Coach, Relationship Coach, and Executive/Leadership Coach, I have been very assistive to my many clients because of my life experiences, education, and ability to relate and understand people. I help others to realize that your personal, professional, and relationship life will not get better until you get better. Learning, knowing, and accepting that we will never be perfect, we can always be better.
Welcome to Abeyo. Welcome to A Better You.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a beautiful road. From smooth to rough to smoother. From ups and downs to peace. This road to success has been accomplished with many small achievements that lead to the ultimate goal. The beauty in it is the lessons learned that become wisdom.
My initial struggle was the transition from the Officer/Manager mindset from my old career to becoming more of a businessman with the new type of perspective needed to succeed differently. One of the positives has been family and friends’ support that has helped me with my Coaching business.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Abeyo means “A Better You.” We will never be perfect; we can always be better. We all deal with three types of problems and concerns in our life. They are Personal, Professional, and Relationship. The answer and solution to resolving them are you. A Better You will bring excitement, happiness, peace, or whatever you desire to your life.
Ask yourself, What do I need to become better? Do I need guidance, direction, a mentor, A confidant, a friend, someone who can relate to me, someone who understands my situation? Do I need someone who will not appease me, agree with nor validate what I feel, and give me what I need but has a hard time accepting? When you truthfully answer these questions, you will know that these needs set Abeyo Coaching apart and what we provide.
As your Coach, I assist you with direction and guidance as you journey through areas and times in your life that are uncomfortable, unsure, and sometimes hurtful.
I have been called by many of my clients and friends, the modern-day “Hitch,” but in a different way. Although that is a great compliment, I have established my own identity and respect in my field.
Abeyo Coaching is for anyone willing, focused, and ready to be accountable, acceptable, and genuinely committed to making the changes to themselves to make their lives better. Not everyone is ready because they continue to hide behind and use excuses, which prevents them from moving forward.
Abeyo Coaching provides for you one-on-one Coaching and its successful “Now & Next” Program. This program helps you to address your “Now” or present concerns and problems and prepares you for the “Next” part or, as many say, the new chapters in our lives. This program has become beneficial and a favorite of the majority of our clients.
I love people. I love helping people to become successful with and within themselves and to have happiness and joy. But most of all, I love helping others receive the simplicity, excitement, and peace that fit their lives. This is the what, why, and way of Abeyo Coaching.
We’d love to hear about any memories you have from when you were growing up?
My fondest childhood memories are those of mainly family and the neighbors in my community. My parents had four children, and we always did and shared family time every day.
In my old neighborhood, we had the “Village” mentality and resources needed to help each other grow. This Village included our initial family, other family members, neighbors, and older and younger kids. We were always outside in the sun, rain, and snow, playing all types of games, and becoming so creative with the things we did. Our Village helped the kids in our neighborhood learn lessons and wisdom from those of different ages and generations.
One of the best things about our Village is that we were taught to grow up and become who we want to be. Most of the images that we had of those who resembled us were negative images from television. But what we had seen from our Village was so much different than those television images. Our Village consisted of positive role models who influenced us, pushed us, inspired us, and most of all, they loved us. Having this type of family and support helped many of us to succeed and become what we wanted to become. I became a Lieutenant in the Fire Department and now a Coach. Many others have been successful in their endeavors giving credit to what was shared from our Village.
I want to share this one loving memory that I have. My mother was a teacher at the school around the corner from our house. My brother and I were around 6 and 7 years old. Every day we would always sit on our house’s wooden steps waiting for our mother to come home. We would look down the street, waiting to see her come walking from around the corner. Upon seeing her, we would yell ‘Momma” and run to her with smiles and so much joy. She would always stop walking and embrace us as we jumped in her arms, and say to us, “Hi, my little boys. Momma’s home, and momma love you.” Although we are older and my mother has passed, that memory of her will always brighten me. I share this story because although we didn’t have much financially, we had so much love in our family.
My mother’s deceased now. I miss her and the strong guidance that she instilled in me. I look forward to the day when I will see her again. I will run to her with the same smiles and joy in my heart as I did as a child to hear her say to me, “Momma’s home and, momma love you.”
