Hidden Gems: Meet Meghan of Meghan Sophia Tax & Accounting

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan.

Hi Meghan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I immigrated to the United States from Cuba at the age of 22, filled with hope and determination to build a better future for myself and my family. Those initial years in Miami were both challenging and transformative—I worked three jobs to provide for my loved ones, all while adapting to a new culture and language. After some time, I made the move to Cape Coral, where I focused on being present for my three children by accepting a position as an ESOL paraprofessional at Cape Elementary. The joy of being part of their daily lives was invaluable, but after going through a divorce, I realized that my income alone would not be enough to support us.

Motivated to create a brighter future, I looked for new opportunities and, without any prior experience, was offered a summer position as a bookkeeper. Embracing the challenge, I quickly discovered a genuine passion for accounting. This experience sparked a desire to pursue the field further and ultimately shaped the direction of my career.

In 2012, seeking to deepen my expertise, I applied for a position at a CPA firm in Fort Myers. I am profoundly grateful that the owner, Shane Northrop, saw potential in me and became both a mentor and a teacher. His generosity in sharing his knowledge and guidance was instrumental in my growth. With his encouragement, I pursued my accounting education at FGCU, which became a cornerstone for my personal and professional development.

After twelve years of invaluable learning and experience, I felt called to take the next step and establish my own firm. This leap was made possible by the unwavering support and encouragement of my fiancé, Albert Alguadich, whose belief in me gave me the confidence to follow my dream. Creating my own practice has been one of the most rewarding decisions of my life.

As I reflect on my journey, I am deeply grateful for every challenge, opportunity, and mentor along the way. Each phase—from arriving in a new country, to raising my children, to building a career in accounting—has strengthened my sense of purpose. Today, I am honored to serve my community, helping others achieve their financial goals, and I am mindful of the many people who have supported me on this path.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been anything but smooth, but I believe it’s the challenges that have shaped my resilience and determination. As an immigrant arriving in a new country without fluent English or a professional network, I faced significant cultural and language barriers. Balancing multiple jobs while trying to support my family was exhausting and, at times, overwhelming.

Starting over in Cape Coral as a single mother brought its own set of difficulties. Navigating the realities of raising three children on my own, while dealing with the emotional and financial challenges of divorce, tested my strength daily. Entering the accounting field was another hurdle. With no prior experience, I had to learn everything from scratch, often feeling out of my depth but always pushing myself to improve.

Even as I advanced in my career, there were moments of self-doubt—wondering if I could keep up, if I was making the right decisions for my family, and later, whether I could succeed in running my own firm. Each obstacle taught me to be adaptable, to ask for help when needed, and to trust in my ability to learn and grow. Looking back, every struggle was also an opportunity, helping me become not only a better professional, but also a stronger person.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Taking risks has played a pivotal role throughout my personal and professional journey. I believe that growth rarely happens within our comfort zones, and some of the most rewarding changes in my life have come from taking bold steps forward—even when the path felt uncertain.

One of the biggest risks I took was immigrating to the United States at a young age, leaving behind everything familiar to pursue better opportunities for myself and my family. Later, transitioning into a completely new field with no prior experience required me to put aside my fears and trust in my ability to learn and adapt. Starting my own accounting firm was another major leap. Leaving the security of a stable job for the unknowns of entrepreneurship was both exciting and intimidating, but I knew that pursuing my dream was worth the challenge.

To me, risk doesn’t mean acting recklessly. It means being willing to pursue opportunities, even when there are no guarantees, and having the perseverance to keep moving forward despite setbacks. I approach risk with careful thought, planning, and a willingness to seek guidance from mentors and loved ones. Looking back, each risk I’ve taken has brought growth, new relationships, and a deeper sense of purpose.

I encourage others to view risk as an essential part of any meaningful journey. While it can be uncomfortable, it’s often the catalyst for discovering your true potential and achieving goals you never thought possible.
