Hidden Gems: Meet Marissa Roberts of Serendipity Health and Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Roberts.

Hi Marissa , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Serendipity Health and Wellness was born out of both burnout and hope. During COVID, I saw firsthand how broken our healthcare system had become — patients were rushed, providers were exhausted, and true connection was getting lost. I wanted something different, something that focused on the whole human.

When you can’t change the broken framework/system, you create your own…so I did.

I opened Serendipity Health and Wellness with the belief that true connection is key and everyone deserves a safe space to be seen, heard, and cared for. A vision to reimagine what healthcare could look like — a place where comfort is key, where every person feels heard, and where we focus on finding the why behind illness rather than simply treating symptoms. We take an “East meets West” approach, blending functional medicine to find the root cause with Western medicine when it’s needed. My goal was to build a place where patients feel empowered through education and partnership, not just prescriptions. True relationship-driven healthcare.

What started as a tiny dream has grown into a thriving family practice with an incredible team who shares the same heart, caring for patients of all ages and walking alongside them through every stage of life. We focus on education, prevention, and empowerment, helping people understand their bodies so they can make choices that support long-term wellness.

Today, Serendipity is more than a clinic, it’s a family. We meet people where they are, honor their stories, and help them take control of their health so they can live their best lives. Serendipity is a community built on compassion, trust, and the belief that healing happens when people feel truly seen and supported.

Every step of this journey has reminded me that even in our most challenging seasons, there’s always a way forward, everything is figureoutable and that’s what Serendipity is all about.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Building a family practice on a family budget, without financial backing, has been far from easy. Starting out as an autonomous NP in a state new to NP autonomy meant I had to prove myself to insurance companies, to patients, and to the community. Prove that I was a real provider with real skills who could make real change. Early on, I was juggling three jobs just to keep everything afloat, while building my dream, working seven-day weeks and essentially being “on” 24/7.

Finding balance -caring deeply for patients while also remembering to care for myself. This has been an ongoing challenge. There were times of doubt, exhaustion, and financial strain, but my passion for helping people and my amazing circle of family and friends kept me going.

Over the last 3 years, we’ve grown into a bustling practice. We’re now in network with nearly all insurance carriers, and we offer cash pay options and memberships to ensure care is accessible to everyone. Every day is still a learning experience, but the hard work and persistence have created a space where patients feel truly seen, supported, and empowered.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Serendipity Health and Wellness is a family practice like no other. We offer relationship drive care for patients of all ages with a focus on wellness, prevention, and the whole person. We blend functional medicine with Western approaches to uncover root causes, tailor treatment plans, and help patients achieve long-term health.

What sets us apart is our commitment to truly listening, educating, and empowering patients. We offer flexible care options, including insurance, memberships and cash-pay services, to make quality healthcare accessible to everyone.

At Serendipity, it’s not just about treating symptoms, it’s about building a supportive, safe space where patients feel heard, respected, and equipped to live their best lives.

How do you think about luck?
Luck has played a surprisingly big role in the journey of Serendipity Health and Wellness but sometimes it shows up in unexpected ways. I love to tell the story of our opening and the moment I truly felt like this was meant for me.

We were set to open our brick-and-mortar office on October 3, 2022. Everything was ready, freshly painted, newly furnished, and fully prepped. But as the date approached, I kept asking myself: Is this really what I’m meant to do? What if I fail? What if we lose everything? The risk was big, and I was searching for a sign.

Then, on September 28, Hurricane Ian decimated our area. Initially, I took it as a sign that it wasn’t my time. I assumed the office was destroyed. Armed with my insurance policy, my best friend Jenn and I drove to Serendipity to take photos for the claim and salvage anything we could. From a distance, nearby buildings had their roofs peeled back, and I braced myself for the worst.

When we arrived at our office, the building looked relatively intact from the outside. I opened the door, and a rush of cold air greeted us. I flipped on the lights and everything was perfect. Electricity, water, no damage, no intrusion, it was as if the hurricane had bypassed our little unit entirely. Out of the entire complex, only three units were untouched, and Serendipity was one of them.

That moment was my sign. It was the clarity I needed to leap forward, to trust that this was my path. We opened just ten days later, and I’ve carried that leap-of-faith mindset into every growth opportunity since. While it hasn’t been perfect, owning a business comes with its fair share of learning experiences, I truly believe Serendipity was meant to be. We were meant to serve our community in that moment, and every challenge since has only confirmed that belief.

Luck, in this sense, isn’t just about chance it’s about recognizing the signs, trusting your instincts, and having the courage to leap when the time is right. I’m grateful every day that we did.
