Today we’d like to introduce you to Dorothea Cornelius.
Hi Dorothea, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started out as a career-changer in digital graphic design back in 2004 in Germany and built a thriving remote career across Europe, also serving clients in the US and Canada. At a time when remote work was still rare and not widely accepted, I relied on a highly organized workflow, seamless communication, and rapid response times. Over the years, I developed a loyal client base, most of whom I continue to work with today even after relocating from Germany to Florida 17 years ago. My clients value organization just as much as my design skills, because it builds trust and ensures my creativity consistently delivers on time and in line with their business goals.
Secretly, I have a soft spot for digital artwork. But I also enjoy the technical aspects of my work.
Here in Florida, I’ve strengthened relationships with local real estate agents and other small businesses, providing web and print design services tailored to their unique needs while remaining committed to my existing international clients. Collaborations with marketing agencies on Florida’s East and West coast have further deepened my understanding of local business requirements.
After more than two decades of building my career across continents, I’ve grown deeply into my local community here in the Cape, making friends, forming professional networks, and discovering opportunities close to home. Recognizing the growing trend of supporting local businesses since the pandemic, I have recently started to focus on building a stronger local presence and exploring ways to increasingly support businesses in my community.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of our biggest challenges was relocating, juggling business responsibilities while moving, and adjusting to life in a new country. It was demanding, but also a welcome challenge, one we had prepared for and consciously chosen for ourselves.
We still laugh when we think about the day our overseas container finally arrived packed to the brim with equipment so we could at last retire our trusty folding chairs. The moment we opened it, a wave of heat hit us like a sauna. Within 120 minutes, we unloaded the container which felt like an oven on wheels, and we couldn’t stop sweating for hours.
But that was nothing compared to the challenges the truck driver faced. He arrived with a police escort after his truck had broken down, and the officers stayed with him all the way to our door so he could complete the delivery.
That friendly gesture, combined with the “Welcome Home” we received eight weeks earlier when we first entered the U.S. as new residents, has stayed with us ever since. It inspired us to approach our work and community with the same spirit of helpfulness and goodwill.
The pandemic brought another significant test for our company. Like many businesses, we faced uncertainty that temporarily slowed our operations. While the situation hasn’t fully stabilized in recent years, we’ve chosen to focus on moving forward, because progress is the only path to growth and success. These experiences have strengthened our adaptability and determination, shaping the way we support our clients today.
As you know, we’re big fans of Actomic LLC. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Together with my partner, a talented programmer, we offer creative, customized solutions that make a real difference for local companies. We focus on the unique needs of each business.
Many clients start on typical DIY website platforms, only to realize that these seemingly fast and easy solutions often create dependence and limit flexibility for individual requirements, which can slow growth and hinder market-related adjustments. That’s where we come in, developing solutions that truly meet business needs while staying within budget, from print marketing and web design to search engine and LLM optimization or social media advertising.
We see ourselves as more than just creative service providers.
With decades of experience, we have become partners, advisors, problem-solvers, and guides, helping small businesses navigate the many marketing challenges they face today.
Our work doesn’t just focus on creating visually appealing results. We understand that great visuals can only have an impact if people actually see them. That’s why we place just as much importance on how a website performs as on how it looks. Good design needs to be supported by strong foundations to be successful: SEO, performance, usability, best practices, and accessibility are cornerstones of our work. These are the elements clients don’t consciously notice, but they see the effect: more visibility, more user engagement, more success.
That’s what sets us apart from pure design providers and DIY platforms that focus mainly on aesthetics. We combine design and strategy to ensure that a beautiful website doesn’t just look good … it performs.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I really love the sense of community here, even though it’s a fairly large city, and I enjoy the variety of local businesses and cultural events. Being so close to other cities, from Tampa to Naples, is a big plus, and all the growth and energy in the area make it a great place to live and work.
As for dislikes, well, if I had to choose, I’d say the mosquitoes sometimes treat us like a buffet. But honestly, that’s more of a Florida thing than a Cape Coral thing! All in all, I genuinely enjoy living and working here.
