Hidden Gems: Meet Antwan Williams II of The Advancement League

Today we’d like to introduce you to Antwan Williams II.

Antwan Williams II

Hi Antwan, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in St. Pete, Florida, the eldest of 10 children, in a close-knit family steeped in strong values. Growing up with incredible parents and the love of several grandparents, I attended Gibbs High School and became the first person in my family to pursue higher education, beginning my academic journey at Florida State University.

During my college years, I serendipitously discovered my passion for healthcare, thanks to the guidance of mentors and my involvement with the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. This unexpected turn led me on a transformative journey from Florida, to rural Pennsylvania to Orlando FL., to Detroit, Michigan, where I honed my healthcare expertise. Embracing each challenge, I consistently pushed myself to learn and grow.

Today, as the Chief Operating Officer at Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital, I oversee hospital operations and drive the development of high-quality, cost-effective programs and services benefiting patients, physicians, and our dedicated team members. But before taking on this role, I spent two years as the Vice President of Operations at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital in Michigan and held significant administrative positions at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children and Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies.

I further enriched my knowledge through leadership roles at Geisinger Health in Pennsylvania, particularly in the realm of emergency medicine operations. My educational journey includes earning a bachelor’s degree from Florida State University and a master’s degree in health services administration from the University of Central Florida in Orlando. I also completed a global leadership and executive management program at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

In addition to my professional achievements, I co-founded the Advancement League, a dedicated organization supporting emerging healthcare leaders. I’ve also proudly served several boards, Orlando Science Center, and more. I hope that journey underscores my unwavering determination, hard work, and commitment to making a positive impact in the healthcare field and beyond.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As the saying goes, “Nothing worth having comes without bumps in the road.”

My journey has been no exception. In my early years, I worked tirelessly, balancing two jobs at Kmart and Popeyes Chicken while juggling the responsibilities of a high school student-athlete. Financial solvency was my goal as a freshman college student, and I pursued it relentlessly through grants and part-time jobs, including one at Logan’s Roadhouse.

The path to success was not without its obstacles. I recall a pivotal moment when I came dangerously close to missing admission to the College of Business at Florida State University, narrowly avoiding a roadblock with just one C grade. Job applications brought their own set of disappointments, with countless rejections along the way.

Life presented its share of personal losses as well, including family and friends, and there were times when I found myself living alone in Central Pennsylvania, facing the challenges of solitude. But through it all, what kept me going was perspective.

I came to understand that life is inherently difficult for everyone and that adversity is an integral part of any meaningful journey. Despite the hardships and setbacks, I wouldn’t trade my experiences for anything. I’ve been blessed with a remarkable circle of family and friends who have provided unwavering support throughout my journey. They’ve been my anchor, my community, and a source of inspiration.

Maintaining a positive perspective has been my guiding principle. It’s a reminder that challenges, though tough, can be overcome with determination and the support of those around us. It’s a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of perseverance.

In the face of adversity, I’ve learned that setbacks are just stepping stones on the path to success. They’ve shaped me, strengthened my resolve, and brought me to where I am today. Through the ups and downs, I’ve remained focused on making a positive impact, knowing that every experience, no matter how challenging, has contributed to my growth as a person and a leader in the healthcare field.
