Exploring Life & Business with Michael Epstein of Seibert Architects

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Epstein.

Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in New Orleans. After graduating from school in the 80s, I came to this part of Florida to visit my grandmother and was impressed with the vibe of Sarasota. I have been here ever since and feel that it was serendipitous.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Over the years, the scale of our projects has evolved, and so have the codes, regulations, and environmental considerations that shape each design. In our new work, we welcome the challenge of adapting Sarasota School of Design principles that meet today’s technical standards.

Beyond our new builds, we have developed a specialty in restoration and adaptive reuse, driven by the belief that preserving historical buildings is an important part of maintaining a community’s cultural identity. Recently, we have taken on the challenge of writing a book, Celebrating 70 Years of Design | Seibert Architects: History & Architectural Works, showing the evolution of the Sarasota School of Architecture within our firm. The book is now available.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Edward J. “Tim” Seibert was a leader in the Sarasota School of Architecture, a midcentury modernism movement rooted in Sarasota. Seibert Architects continues the legacy of the firm he founded in 1955. Seibert established a body of work noteworthy for its modernism, regional sensitivity, elegance, restraint, and deep connection to place.

At Seibert Architects, we do not believe in designing based on a predetermined “style.” Building solutions are a synthesis of site specifics, the client’s intentions and program, climate, and context. Contemporary architectural expression is the logical outcome of this approach. Without that underlying logic, architecture is not art.

Our work includes public sector projects, single-family residences, high-rise condominiums, commercial offices, historical restorations, educational buildings, and large-scale resorts. With 70 years of experience in architecture and planning, Seibert Architects continues its legacy with an award-winning team led by firm principal Michael L. Epstein, AIA. We continue to move forward as a leader of the Sarasota School of Architecture and support Sarasota’s important place in mid-century modern design and architectural history.
