Today we’d like to introduce you to Katelyn Dougherty.
Katelyn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began in Southern Maine, where a deep-rooted passion for law seemed to be an intrinsic part of me. This inexplicable love for the legal field has always been a bit of a mystery, yet it was undeniable I was meant for this field.
My journey was a winding one, marked by internal conflicts and a search for my true calling. This quest saw me oscillating between Maine and Florida, a dance of locations that eventually led me to Tampa, Florida. Tampa felt like destiny, a place that resonated with my soul since my first visit while staying with my grandparents in Zephyrhills. In December 2007, I finally settled in Tampa.
A positive legal influence in my early life was an aunt. Her drive and the exposure I had to her experience though her stories had a fundamental role in my journey. Not to mention, the work ethic and drive engrained in me by my ancestors, and the drive for entrepreneurship that runs in my family. Each element instilling a piece of the foundation that I know will lead to the ownership of a successful business.
Additionally, as an adolescent, strangers often remarked that I seemed destined for the legal field, and as time passed, this became increasingly evident. Then throughout my life, I’ve encountered various attorneys, many of whom could be described as “sharks.” These encounters fueled my desire to reshape the public’s perception of lawyers and to show the world a different, more positive side of the legal profession.
My career began in the Land Use/Commercial Real Estate sector here in Tampa, where I rose from a legal assistant to a nationally certified paralegal. But a deeper calling beckoned, leading me to pursue law school, a decision that meant leaving a firm that had laid a strong foundation for my future.
However, this transition opened doors to a new opportunity at a Business/Corporate Law Transactional Firm. There, I not only ended up assuming the role of Firm Administrator, but also served as a legal associate upon passing the Bar Exam; a dual capacity that allowed me to indulge my passion for both business and law. While at this firm I worked alongside the president to build the business brick by brick.
In the summer of 2022, the president of the firm I was employed at decided to make a change. This resulted in the closure of that firm, and an extraordinary opportunity arose. I seized the chance to leverage my accumulated skills and experiences, founding Harbour Business Law. This boutique law firm is my brainchild, designed to guide entrepreneurs through the complexities of business ownership. My vision for Harour Business Law is to create a team that embodies the values I hold dear, a team that acts as an intrinsic business partner to our clients, to offer much more than just legal services, such as business consulting, strategies, marketing, and more.
The name “Harbour” is a tribute to two beloved places: Boothbay Harbor, where my grandparents bought a home just before my birth and where I spend summers to make the most of the time I have with them, and Harbour Island the place I have called home for over a decade. The logo of my firm was even conceived while working in one of my favorite cafés, overlooking Boothbay Harbor. It serves not only as a reminder of my roots but also as a source of inspiration for my business’s future.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Embarking on my journey in the legal world has rarely been smooth. But nothing worth having is usually easy. Imagine juggling the demands of law school with the intricacies of running a law firm, all while trying to maintain a semblance of personal and professional balance. That was my life for a very long time. Then, as life started to level out, I found myself starting my law firm.
Starting my firm, Harbour Business Law, so quickly (and unexpectedly) without a financial safety net was a leap into the unknown. Each day presented a mix of fear and excitement – the constant worry about finances, coupled with the nagging question: had I made the right choice? Yet, amidst these challenges, there have been numerous moments of affirmation, reassuring me that I am indeed on the right path, both for myself and my clients. A notable highlight was being nominated and becoming a top three finalist in a prestigious award, Tampa Bay’s Small Business of the Year 2023 – a testament to dedication and hard work.
The closure of my previous firm was a pivotal moment. This serendipitous turn of events prompted me to reflect on my professional journey’s direction. Bolstered by the support of many and recognizing this as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, I decided to harness my experience and establish my practice.
This decision was not made lightly. With a client-first mindset, I embarked on this entrepreneurial journey, understanding that this venture would allow me to serve my clients as I always believed they deserved – as a legal partner adept at navigating their business challenges without imposing financial burdens.
My approach is rooted in a deep understanding of the challenges entrepreneurs face. I am committed to building a team and practice that offers exceptional service and unwavering support to our clients. Driven by the potential to positively impact their lives and the broader business community, I aim to provide invaluable legal guidance, advocate for their interests, and contribute to their growth and prosperity.
Starting a law firm soon after obtaining my license posed its own set of challenges, both personal and financial. To build credibility, I’ve seized opportunities to share my expertise through webinars, speaking engagements, and community events. I’ve been strategic in allocating resources and prioritizing essential technology and tools that enhance efficiency and client service.
My current challenge is strategizing how to take on the fiscal responsibility of expanding my team, and how best to attract and retain exceptional talent. As I contemplate the right time to expand my team – an exciting yet daunting prospect – my focus remains steadfast: to provide my clients with the best possible resources and legal support.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Luck, in its many forms, has undeniably played a significant role in both my personal life and the journey of Harbour Business Law. It’s often said that luck is where preparation meets opportunity, and this rings true for my experiences. There have been moments of serendipity – those instances of good luck – that have opened doors or created opportunities that I might not have otherwise encountered. These moments, however, wouldn’t have amounted to much without the groundwork of hard work and dedication that I’ve consistently laid.
In the realm of business, especially, luck can manifest in various ways. It might be meeting the right mentor at a crucial juncture, stumbling upon an unanticipated market need, or simply being in the right place at the right time to secure a pivotal client. Each of these instances can be seen as strokes of good luck, but they wouldn’t have led to success without the hard work put into building and maintaining Harbour Business Law.
Hard work, the backbone of any successful endeavor, has been a constant companion on this journey. The long hours, the dedication to continuous learning and improvement, and the resilience to overcome challenges have all been vital. Building a business from the ground up, especially in the competitive field of law, requires an unwavering commitment and a relentless pursuit of excellence. This hard work has been the vehicle that’s driven the opportunities luck has presented, turning potential into tangible success.
Equally important has been the support of many – colleagues, mentors, clients, family and friends. The role of a supportive network cannot be overstated. These individuals have provided guidance, encouragement, and a sounding board for ideas. Their belief in me and Harbour Business Law has often been a source of strength, particularly during challenging times. This support network has also created opportunities that might be perceived as luck but are, in reality, the fruits of nurturing strong, genuine relationships.
In essence, the interplay of luck, hard work, and support has been a cornerstone of my journey. Luck has opened doors, hard work has allowed me to walk through them, and the support of many has ensured I was ready for whatever lay on the other side. This synergy has been key to both my personal growth and the success of Harbour Business Law, reminding me that while we can’t control luck, we can certainly prepare for it, work hard when it arrives, and cherish the support that helps us along the way.
I simply hope that one day I can be the luck for someone else, as so many have been for me!
