Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Hodges.
Hi Heather, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
There was a time in my life when I would’ve said my journey felt like a series of hard-earned accomplishments followed by even harder setbacks. I’d take two steps forward, only to be pushed four steps back. I used to call it bad luck, roadblocks, & failure. Still, I’d rise again—with blind determination and relentless optimism—to stay the course, stick with the plan, and do what society says you’re “supposed to do” – until one day, I realized the truth: maybe the secret wasn’t to keep pushing forward with the plan.
My name is Heather, I’m a Tampa native, born and raised. Like many people, I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I grew up. After high school I floated between small jobs and eventually wound up in the monotony of call-center life.
One night, meeting friends in Ybor City, my life changed. I was the victim of a brutal attack and nearly lost my life. That moment could’ve broken me—but it didn’t. I wasn’t filled with bitterness or self-pity. I was overwhelmed with gratitude just to still be here. I didn’t know what my purpose was, but I was bound and determined to figure it out. I couldn’t waste the second chance I was given.
I put myself through college, originally majoring in psychology because I’ve always been fascinated by how people think and behave. Eventually I shifted to a more attainable goal and became the first in my family to graduate with a medical degree—an AS in Radiologic Technology. Unfortunately, I graduated in 2008, right as the recession hit. Hospitals had hiring freezes, imaging centers were laying people off, and I couldn’t get a job in the field I had worked so hard for. Defeated and out of options, I reluctantly fell back into call-center work.
Shortly after, a friend sent me a Craigslist job listing (I know, I cringe at the thought now too) for an unpaid internship with a wedding planner. She swore I’d be perfect for it. I was crafty, artistic, organized, a little Type-A, a perfectionist, a people pleaser… but it never once occurred to me that those qualities could become a career, I was passionate about. I applied, sent photos of handmade projects, landed an interview, and was hired. Thankfully she was a legitimate businesswoman—zero interest in turning me into a skinsuit. That opportunity changed my life. I immediately realized my passion for planning.
Most people think being a wedding planner is glamorous—Pinterest boards, champagne, pretty dresses. In reality, its long days, late nights, heavy lifting, high stakes, sore feet, tight timelines, multiple roles as mediator, therapist, public speaker, maybe a little blood, so much sweat, and sometimes even tears (mostly during those danged heartfelt speeches). But for me, it came with great reward and I loved it. I loved the creativity, the problem-solving, the beauty, the chaos, the collaborations and visions coming to life, and most of all, the people. The greatest honor of this career is being trusted to orchestrate one of the most meaningful and magical days in someone’s life.
I spent nearly ten years with that company, working my way from unpaid intern to Lead Coordinator. When the owner stepped away to start a family, I was handling almost every wedding that came in. Still, I thought I needed a “real” career. I went back to school, earned two more degrees—an AA and a Bachelor’s in MRI and Healthcare Management—only to discover, due to a major error on the school’s end, that I couldn’t work in the field. A second degree I couldn’t use. I can’t even describe how devastating that felt.
But it was also the moment everything clicked. I started to think it was too synchronous to be coincidence,
For the first time in my life, I stopped forcing myself further down the same a path just because I thought it was what I was “supposed to do”, or “the plan”. Instead, I listened & focused on what life had been trying to tell me and I was finally seeing the bigger picture. I realized maybe it wasn’t working out because it wasn’t meant to. I had already found my passion – I just hadn’t allowed myself to believe it could be my career. I had been chasing what would fill my pockets instead of what would fill my purpose.
After the world-stopping pandemic, I stopped waiting, I stopped doubting and started moving in the direction the universe seemed to be guiding me. I launched Planner Makes Perfect Weddings & Events. Within weeks of starting my business, I was laid off from my last call-center job. Within a month, clients started pouring in. And they haven’t stopped. Today, I’ve built a business I love—without ever needing to wear another Plantronics headset again. I’ve trained other passionate planners so we can serve more couples. I’ve expanded into luxury picnics and continue to grow year after year. I am living my purpose, doing work that matters to me, creating memories that will last long after the last dance.
It finally clicked: The secret was that the plan I had for my life wasn’t the one life had for me. What society says you’re “supposed to do” isn’t always what is meant for you.
What I once called bad luck, roadblocks, and failure turned out to be divine redirection—whether from the universe, God, or a very exhausted team of guardian angels. Sometimes breakthroughs don’t come from pushing harder or clinging to the path you thought you should be on… they come when you stop seeing setbacks as failures and finally move in the direction life has been pointing you toward all along.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Smooth? Ha, not exactly. If it wasnt exemplified by my previous answer, the universe has a sense of humor that dabbles in sarcasm (much like my own) and it loves teaching me meaningful lessons that take me years to unpack and eventually extract those golden nuggets of wisdom from. If it was smooth it wouldnt be fun, I like a challenge and I dont think “smooth” is how growth happens – at least not for me.
There have been challenges. When I launched Planner Makes Perfect (PMP), I had all the passion and experience – I could plan a wedding in my sleep, but the business management side of things eluded me. I had never been involved in that part at my previous company. There’s no handbook that tells you exactly how to price services, manage multiple events, protect your time, or scale without burning out. I had to learn those things the hard way, lots of reasearch, and some cursing. Building a business from scratch means I’m a “jack of all trades, master of none”. Starting out, I couldnt afford to pay experts to handle it all or pay for a CRM, so I had to be the PMP web developer, social media manager, content creator, marketer, bookkeeper, trainer, customer service rep, tech support, office manager, crisis manager, and sometimes therapist. There’s a lot of pressure when you leave the security of a paycheck and rely solely on your own effort and reputation. And of course, in this industry, every event is high stakes — you only get one wedding day, so perfection isn’t optional.
There was alot of hard work, and thousands of unpaid hours. But, Im pretty proud of what I’ve accomplished so far. I’ve created some tools for the job, that make our lives easier. They are self sustaining and Im still relying on many of those tools to this day. I also learned how to build systems, how to protect boundaries, how to trust my instincts, and how to run a business with heart and structure. The struggles shaped me into a stronger planner, a better leader, and a more confident business owner. So much so that I launched a second business in another industry.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Planner Makes Perfect Weddings & Events?
Planner Makes Perfect Weddings & Events is a full-service wedding and event planning company based in Tampa Bay. We specialize in all aspects of event planning, though the bulk of our business centers around weddings. Our wedding packages include Day-Of Coordination, Month-Of Coordination, Partial Planning, Full Planning, Destination Weddings, and fully custom packages. Month-Of and Partial Planning are our two most popular options.
Our second most popular service category is our Custom Luxury Pop-Up Picnics, which are tailored to each client’s event and personal preferences—from romantic proposals and anniversaries to birthdays, showers, and micro-events with full décor, florals, charcuterie, and beautiful themed designs. It’s been such a fun creative outlet and a way to bring celebrations to life outside the ballroom.
There are three key things that truly set us apart from our competitors:
1. Our Pricing
While we are known for being incredibly detail-oriented and organized, our philosophy is rooted in something deeper—we believe every couple deserves a magical, stress-free wedding day, no matter their budget, background, or style. We don’t believe luxury service requires a luxury price tag. I was stunned to learn what planners were charging in the post Covid world and I could not charge those rates in good conscience. Many couples are surprised to learn that our pricing is intentionally more accessible than the industry standard. We want people to enjoy planning, not drown in stress or debt.
2. Our Commitment to the Client Experience
Our priority is always the couple and their experience. Our approach to service—and the heart behind our brand—is what sets us apart. Our goal is to make each wedding magical and stress-free so couples can be present and truly enjoy these once-in-a-lifetime moments. We step into what can often be a chaotic process and bring calm, clarity, and structure. We build relationships with our clients, their families, and their vendors. We collaborate, not just coordinate. And on event day, we’re everywhere—managing timelines, solving problems behind the scenes, and making sure the couple never has to worry about logistics.
3. Our Extensive Package Inclusions and Free Bonus Perks
Despite our lower price points, our packages are intentionally more detailed and inclusive than what most planning companies offer, because we believe couples should get the most for their investment. Some of these perks include: two professionals for the price of one at every wedding, free use of our décor inventory, complimentary wedding day content sent to clients for personal use and social media, budgeting sheets with built-in formulas, monthly check-ins and reminders, seating chart and meal selection templates, unlimited email/phone/text support from the day you sign, built-in private moments for the couple, staging of the honeymoon suite, incorporating TikTok/Reel inspiration you love, and so much more.
What I’m most proud of, brand-wise, is the reputation we’ve built based on the value we have provided to so many couples. Planner Makes Perfect is known for being calm, organized, responsive, and genuinely dedicated to our couples. I spent a long time choosing a name that would reflect our mission — the promise that we will take the stress out of planning and execute your day just as perfectly as if you had done it yourself. Your vision, your way, stress-free.
When you hire us, you’re not just hiring someone to run a timeline — you’re hiring a team that protects your peace, your memories, and your experience. Whether it’s a ballroom wedding, a backyard ceremony, or a luxury pop-up picnic, we bring the same passion, intention, and care to every event.
At the core, our brand is built on our passion for making magic happen — with a little help from some experienced Type-A, detail-oriented perfectionists who may or may not have a touch of OCD and a deep love for structure, organization, and people-pleasing. We don’t just show up with clipboards — we show up with heart, humor, and the determination to make sure your day feels effortless, joyful, and completely you.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I was born and raised in Tampa, so this city will always have my heart. Tampa is the perfect balance — it’s not a massive, overwhelming metropolis like New York or L.A., but it’s not rural either. It feels like a big city with small-town charm. You can enjoy culture, nightlife, incredible food, and opportunity, but still run into someone you know at Publix and feel like home.
I love that Tampa is such a melting pot. We have people from everywhere, which means exposure to different cultures, different perspectives, and of course — different cuisines. My personal favorite is Cuban food. The fact that the Cuban sandwich was born here is a point of pride I will defend forever. Add in deviled crabs, Gasparilla, and our quirky pirate history, and you realize Tampa has a personality all its own.
I also love that we are minutes away from St. Pete, Clearwater, and some of the best beaches and sunsets in the country. I’m a foodie, so I love the constantly growing restaurant scene. And I love being outdoors — hiking, kayaking, rivers, springs, and of course spotting our beloved manatees (and occasionally, an alligator reminding you who really owns Florida).
As for what I like least? Two things: the humidity and the traffic. Summers here feel like living inside a hair dryer set to “sauna,” and the mosquitoes are roughly the size of small helicopters. And with Tampa growing so fast, the traffic has reached a level that can test even the most patient soul. But even with the heat, humidity, tourists, and construction zones that appear overnight — Tampa is home. It’s beautiful, diverse, and full of personality. I wouldn’t trade it for anywhere else.
