Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Dempsey.
Hi Heather, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been in the spa industry since the ’90s and eventually built what became the #1 day spa in the greater Philadelphia region, earning “Best of Bucks” for over a decade. My approach was always highly personalized—every facial, every treatment, every conversation—because I’ve always believed people need to feel genuinely seen and accepted exactly as they are.
Even with that success, I was struggling quietly. I’d come home and cry at dinner, thinking that was completely normal because I was an entrepreneur juggling a lot. When my brother ended his life, it made me realize that I was also deeply depressed and searching for something more meaningful—trying to figure out what the point of it all really was.
So, I did what I can only describe as a full reset. I ran away to Costa Rica, where I completed a three-month advanced yoga teacher training, and then spent some time in California, taking space to process, reflect, and rebuild. When I returned home, I found out that my marriage had ended while I was gone, which first caused a meltdown that pushed me into a place of complete reevaluation and rebuilding—both personally and professionally.
I turned to my mentors—not to ask about business strategy, but to ask how people keep showing up when they barely want to. That’s when I realized it was time to start over.
I sold my spa, moved to a completely new area in Pennsylvania, and began rebuilding my life from the inside out. I immersed myself in psychology, hypnotherapy, and transformational coaching, learning everything I could about the subconscious mind—how belief systems form, how emotional patterns repeat, and how we can rewire those old protective mechanisms into healthier, freer ways of being.
Over time, I became certified in multiple modalities and built a global virtual coaching practice, helping clients around the world uncover the subconscious roots of stress, self-sabotage, relationship patterns, and emotional overwhelm. I use tools like parts work (IFS-inspired coaching), belief clearing, subconscious re-patterning, attachment-style awareness, hypnotherapy, Emotion Code, and crystal healing to help people reconnect with themselves, build healthier boundaries, and create emotional safety from the inside out.
About six years ago, I moved to Venice, Florida – running my global business virtually—until about four years ago, when my social media accounts were hacked and later banned because of the hacker’s behavior. Overnight, I lost the platforms that connected me to clients across the world. Losing my online presence pushed me to pivot – to rebuild locally, connect face-to-face, and create a healing space in my own community.
That’s when The Self-Care Center was born—a day spa / wellness center focused on emotional wellness. We offer facials, massage, Reiki, crystal healing, sound therapy, and subconscious coaching, hypnotherapy and other modalities. The idea is to treat the whole person—mind, body, and spirit—so clients walk out feeling lighter, calmer, and more connected.
The Self-Care Center was awarded Best New Business in Venice by the Venice Chamber of Commerce last year, and this year we’ve been nominated for Best Small Business. I’m incredibly proud of that because it represents not just the work we do, but the impact it has on people’s lives.
Now that the center is established, I’m committed to re-establishing my virtual coaching practice. My goal is to help people around the world develop self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and a strong internal foundation so they can create more authentic relationships and more peace in their lives. When people can repattern old patterns, process past trauma and rewrite their stories – truly understand themselves, they naturally become more compassionate, grounded, and fulfilled—and that ripple effect creates a kinder world for everyone.
Whether it’s through coaching, hypnosis, or energy work, my focus is helping people repattern how they think, feel, and respond, so they can live with clarity, confidence, and calm.
My work is my passion, so in many ways it’s also my hobby. I’m in the process of obtaining my PhD and I also just finished refining the first draft of my personal growth book—a guide that walks readers through the same self-awareness and subconscious transformation processes I used to move through grief, loss, and rebuilding. It’s designed to help people reconnect with themselves and navigate life’s hardest moments with more grace, understanding, and strength.
And what keeps me nourished while constantly diving deep into inner work or studying the processes that help us do it is fostering neonatal kittens (bottle babies), caring for my four fish tanks and many plants, or enjoying great food—cooking at home or exploring local restaurants.
I love nurturing things—people, animals, plants, fish—it fills me up. I love it when everything and everyone is thriving. My deepest hope, both personally and professionally, is to help create a world where healing, growth, and connection are the norm.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ohh, goodness—so many, lol. I mentioned a lot of them when I shared my story: childhood trauma, losing my brother to suicide, a divorce, a volatile relationship that followed, a social media ban that wiped out my virtual business, and a couple of big start-overs in new places.
Each one of those experiences challenged me in a different way, but they also shaped me into who I am today. They gave me empathy, adaptability, and a deep understanding of what it means to rebuild—not just a business, but yourself. I like to think of those challenges as the source of some of my greatest strengths… maybe even my superpowers.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At The Self-Care Center, we focus on treating the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. It’s not just about pampering or quick fixes; it’s about helping people feel at home within themselves. Our offerings include facials, massage, Reiki, crystal healing, sound therapy, and subconscious coaching, all designed to help clients unwind physically while releasing deeper layers of emotional or energetic stress.
What makes our approach different is that we integrate therapeutic coaching and hypnotherapy into the wellness experience. Many of our guests come in for a facial or massage, but they quickly realize there’s an opportunity to go much deeper—into the beliefs, emotions, and subconscious patterns that impact how they feel and show up in their lives. It’s a blend of clinical expertise and emotional intelligence that creates real, lasting change, not just a moment of relaxation.
Alongside the spa, I also work virtually and globally as a transformational coach and hypnotherapist, specializing in parts work, belief clearing, subconscious re-patterning, Emotion Code, attachment-style awareness, and crystal energy work. My coaching helps people uncover and shift the root causes of self-sabotage, people-pleasing, emotional overwhelm, and relationship patterns that keep them stuck.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud that everything we do feels authentic and heart-centered. There’s no pretense, no cookie-cutter scripts—just genuine connection and care. I believe that’s why we were honored as Best New Business in Venice by the Venice Chamber of Commerce and nominated for Best Small Business this year.
What I want readers to know about The Self-Care Center is that it’s not your typical spa. It’s a sanctuary for healing, self-awareness, and reconnection. Whether someone is coming in for a facial, an energy session, or subconscious coaching, they’ll always leave feeling seen, grounded, and a little more like themselves again.
I also have a small passion project called Elite Spa Pros Academy. It’s where I help other spa professionals learn how to grow their businesses through genuine connection — not just marketing tactics. I teach them how to understand their clients on a deeper level, communicate effectively, and express their unique voice so that the right clients are naturally drawn to them. It’s part strategy, part psychology, and part personal development. Using psychology to grow a business so they get to do more of what they love rather than spending too much time marketing what they do.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I’d say my authenticity and willingness to be vulnerable have been huge contributors to my success. I don’t try to present a perfect version of myself — I share the real experiences, the lessons, and even the messy parts, because that’s what people actually connect with.
Another big part of my success is my drive. I have a very strong desire to accomplish things, to be respected, and to create something meaningful. There’s definitely a touch of perfectionism and that “can’t-fail” energy that’s fueled me over the years — part healthy ambition, part fear of not being enough. I’ve learned to see that as both my motivator and my mirror. It keeps me pushing forward but also reminds me to stay grounded and self-aware.
At my core, I just want to see people happy and thriving. That mix of compassion, purpose, and pure determination has helped me do things others might hesitate to try — launching new ideas, building businesses from scratch, taking bold chances. I’m not driven by a fear of failure as much as I’m driven by a fear of not trying, because to me, standing still would be the real failure.
