Exploring Life & Business with Cheyenne Starczewski of Stars Counseling Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cheyenne Starczewski.

Hi Cheyenne, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a Tampa native and graduate of Tampa Catholic High School. I went on to earn my bachelor’s degree in psychology at the University of South Florida before moving to Connecticut, where I completed my master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. During that time, I gained valuable experience working in schools and providing in-home therapy for children and teens.

Growing up, I wasn’t always sure what path I would take, but I knew I wanted to help people. Looking back on my own adolescence, I realize how much I would have benefitted from having a trusted adult to confide in. That insight continues to guide my work today as I hold that space for teens—helping them find their voice and their strength.

When I returned home to Florida, I worked at an ESE school supporting children and teens with learning differences. After taking time away to be with my own children, I felt called to create something new in my community. Three years ago, I founded Stars Counseling Services. Since then, our practice has grown into a team of women who share the same passion for mental health that I do. Leading this group and serving families in my hometown is something I am grateful for every day.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the greatest challenges along my journey has been learning how to balance my roles as both a mother and a business owner. When I stepped away from the school system to spend more time with my children, I realized how important it was for me to be present for my family. At the same time, I felt a deep pull to continue serving teens and families in my community.

Starting Stars Counseling Services was both exciting and daunting. Building a practice from the ground up while raising a family came with its share of long nights, sacrifices, and moments of doubt. There were times I worried if I could give my best to both—my children at home and the families who entrusted me with their care.

Over time, I learned that the two roles actually strengthen one another. Being a mother deepens my empathy as a counselor, and being a counselor reminds me of the importance of connection and presence at home. While the balance isn’t always perfect, I’ve found that leading with passion, gratitude, and flexibility allows me to thrive in both.

We’ve been impressed with Stars Counseling Services , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Stars Counseling Services is a women-led practice dedicated to supporting children, teens, adults, and families through life’s challenges. We’re best known for creating a safe, welcoming space where anybody can find their voice and families can heal together.

What sets us apart is our heart—we combine evidence-based therapies like ACT, IFS, EMDR, and mindfulness with genuine warmth and care. We’re proud to be a team of passionate clinicians making therapy accessible, inclusive, and stigma-free in our community.

At Stars, our mission is simple: to help every client grow, thrive, and feel empowered in who they are.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
My biggest advice for anyone just starting out, whether in counseling, business, or any helping profession, is to give yourself grace and patience. Growth takes time. When I first started, I thought I had to have everything figured out right away, but the truth is, you learn by doing and by staying open to the process.

I wish I had known that it’s okay to say no to things that don’t align with your values or your strengths. Early on, I tried to be everything to everyone, but I’ve since learned that specializing and leaning into what you’re passionate about makes your work more meaningful—and sustainable.

Finally, surround yourself with mentors and peers who lift you up. Building a career (and for me, a practice) can feel overwhelming at times, but having a support system and remembering your “why” makes all the difference.
