Today we’d like to introduce you to Succulent Garden
Hi Succulent, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
In 1938 Walter Sparkman purchased 2 lots in Palm Groves subdivision and built a bungalow. This property has been the home of the Sarasota Succulent Society since 1950. Mr Sparkman, founder of the Society, lived here until his death in 1968. In 2004 the property, including the house and the chicken coop, received a historic designation by the City of Sarasota.
The property, consisting of ,62 acres and current buildings are owned by the SSS, a non-profit, all volunteer organization.
Mr Sparkman’s interest in growing things centered on cacti and succulents, eventually buying 2 more lots and planting gardens around his home. He along with 6 women recognized the need for a more formal way to study, research, and educate people about succulents. They went on to form and officially charter the Society in 1950.
Though we have experienced many past challenges, the hardest being waning interest, declining membership and financial hardship. The SSS has recovered and continues today. With motivated volunteers, generous members, and much hard work the garden thrives. We continue to sell all things succulent and fun, through open garden days, 3 sale days and free to the public programs. The resurgence of public interest in the last few years, has been a boon to the small, but mighty garden. In reflection of all good things that have been happening, we are looking forward to 2025, when we celebrate our 75th year of existence!!! All year long we will show our appreciation of of our customers and members.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No. declining membership and volunteer garden workers; financial hardship; vacancies in leadership position all led us to no sales, no income, no people. close to dissolving once or twice.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
no one person,, we are volunteers, basically we love plants/gardening
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
increased public interest (exposure); motivated members and volunteers; generous hearts
