Today we’d like to introduce you to Rory Reid.
Rory, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised on the island of Jamaica in the city of Kingston. My family and I moved to Tampa in 1997 and I’ve been here ever since. Art has been a part of my life since I was a child and as a result, I’ve dedicated my life to the craft and have chosen to make it my profession as it is one of my true passions. After my scholastic career was over, I entered corporate America in the field of accounting. However, after being unfulfilled in this field, I made the decision to return back to my true passion, art. I am largely self-taught and have been working as a professional fine artist for the last several years.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting in a new industry from scratch has not been an easy at all. Being a bit naive about business when I began, it was inevitable that I would have encountered the obstacles that I did along the way. I was initially only worried about creating a painting and delivering it to my collectors upon purchase. I quickly learned that I would have to gain knowledge in many other fields to be able to succeed. Such as learning about payment processing, photography, videography, marketing (social media, email, direct), etc. This coupled with trying to master my craft and building a sustainable income has been an enormous struggle. If not for my absolute love of painting, I would have already moved on to another less difficult path in life.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a fine artist. I am known for creating magnificent paintings using acrylic paint as my main medium. I am most proud of disseminating a righteous message (derived from the Bible) through my art to those who follow me and my work. I display a very high-level competence in different genres and styles of painting. Whether it be portraiture, landscapes, or figurative work and this mastery sets me apart from most artists.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
My favorite thing about Tampa Bay is the diversity of cultures it has from various walks of life. It is very similar to Jamaica in that way so I was able to fit right in and feel at home when I moved here.
My least favorite thing about Tampa is the lack of diversity and points of interest in the landscape. Meaning there are no mountains or hills to break up the monotony visually. The landscape is largely flat and that is pretty boring especially for an artist like myself.
