Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Smith.
Hi Melissa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I always loved dancing and the arts. I started as a professional ballet dancer, turned theme park musical theatre girl. I also worked in MLB and NBA promotions and events. I moved here from Cleveland and was asked to be the resident choreographer. I have been teaching children and adults for many years.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Life obstacles, of course. I moved back to Cleveland to take care of my mother with Alzheimer’s before she passed away. Luckily, my love and passion for arts and entertainment always persevered. Taking over the theatre was a huge hassle. Everything was unorganized and not updated. The theatre was finally thriving until COVID came.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Even when I was training at the Cleveland Ballet, I was always extra. Talked, laughed, joked, performed. It was only a matter of time before I found my true niche of acting. Although I always enjoy having fun, the discipline has gotten me through to where I am today, running a beautiful historic theatre. I have done so many fun things for work in my lifetime. Now it’s time to give what I learned back to the community. I am a natural performer and leader and I receive utmost respect from my colleagues and peers. I love watching the kids and teens grow into their lives and careers, hoping I had a positive effect on them.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Watching Swan Lake with my parents. I was in awe of the beauty and grace. The music moved me.
