Hi Mary, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My name is Mary, and I own Frances Design Photography—”Frances” is my middle name. Like many others during the pandemic, I started this business in 2020, but for me, it was a truly liberating career move.
I am entirely self-taught, yet my past careers served as valuable steppingstones in launching this business. Whenever I needed to learn something, I learned it. When upgrading my gear became necessary, I saved up and invested in it. The first two years were fully dedicated to learning, growing, and expanding, setting the foundation for the work I do today.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a business is not for the weak. It’s hard, and I would be lying if I said there were never tears, disappointment, and fear. But I rise above every obstacle and just try harder. Now, my photography offers a top-notch, one-of-a-kind experience. I pour my heart and soul into this business, and I am so proud to be the owner of Frances Design Photography.

My Photography Approach: Capturing Authentic Moments
This is what I am most proud of and sets me apart from others. As a wife of a dedicated first responder, and together we share two wonderful children—a 9-year-old daughter and a 5-year-old son—along with three rescue dogs. Family means everything to me, and that passion drives my approach to photography.
In family sessions, my goal is to foster real love, laughter, and genuine connections—not just endless posing. I create an environment where families can relax, bond, and truly enjoy their time together, resulting in heartfelt images that reflect their unique dynamics.
For weddings, I focus on the details that make the day unforgettable—every meaningful glance, every special touch, and every important moment. I ensure that every guest feels seen, valued, and respected, because if they were invited, they hold significance in the couple’s story.
Not everyone loves being in front of the camera, but everyone leaves loving their photoshoot experience with Frances Design. My motto is “It’s not just about taking pictures; it’s about capturing the moments that tell your story and create timeless memories.”
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I pride myself on being transparent and straightforward about my services, and work ethic. While many are already familiar with this, those who haven’t met me yet might not be. In today’s world, finding genuinely honest individuals can be challenging. I deeply value each client who has chosen to work with me.
