Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Davis.
Hi Mariah, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I would like to think that my story is pretty inspiring to most people. Growing up, I was definitely the type of person who is an overachiever and wanted many people to be happy with the things I did. I strived throughout grade school to make the best grades possible so that I can get accepted into college and make a better life for myself. I have been dancing since the age of three, and I am trained in ballet, jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, and many other styles of dance. In high school, I was the head captain of my dance team, which led me to try out for the amazing 14 Karat Gold Dancers at Bethune Cookman university. I made the team my freshman year and was the youngest on the team that year. This allowed me to receive a full scholarship so I did not have to pay for anything during my undergrad.
Throughout school, while attaining my bachelor’s in psychology, I struggle to find my true self as well as learn to be around other people. I had to separate from my twin sister due to us, not having the same interest so going to college without her was difficult until I learned how to manage it. I also became co-captain of 14 Karat Gold dancers. I joined the illustrious Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority Incorporated. I then graduated at the top of my class. Right after college I went right back to school and obtained my master’s in counseling psychology. I wasn’t sure exactly where I wanted to go with this degree. I just knew that it would be beneficial for me and my future. I have a joy in helping others as well as talking to others about their problems which have always been a true gift of mine. Shortly after graduating with my master’s, I became pregnant with my baby boy. My pregnancy was very difficult, emotionally and physically.
However, I knew that something great was going to come out of this situation. I experience a lot of dark times during those nine months of me being pregnant, which allowed me a better opportunity to look at life and realize that true peace comes within a person, knowing how to handle situations. My son’s name is Peace for that reason. A year after my son’s birth I was notified that my mom has stage four breast cancer. I was devastated. I was broken and I was confused because anybody that knows my mother knows that she is such an amazing person. She is so selfless, and she thinks about everyone else as well as puts them first. That year was the most spiritually and emotionally trying year of my life. I decided I wanted to do something better so that I could help her as well as provide a better life for me and my son.
Later, that year, we found out that the tumor has spread to her brain. However, we did not lose hope we continue to pray, we changed our eating habits completely so that she can feel more comfortable around our family. That’s when I decided to start my business called Prettybrows Inc. This business not only allows me to do my passion which is makeup and beauty, but I’m also able to provide a better life for my family. I decided to invest in myself and take a class and today my business is currently up and running and eventually this will be my full-time job. I take pride in my business and I try to make sure that everyone is satisfied after their service. I specialize in microblading, ombre brows, and brow tints, and I do brow shaping as well. I am able to help my mom out financially, and she is currently part of a clinical trial at Moffit, where she has seen amazing results in her treatment. With all that I’ve been through this year, and in my past the best decision I have made is starting this business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road, starting my business due to me, having to perfect the skill that I was taught for my business. Microblading and ombre brows are difficult because it is a permanent services. So it’s not something that you could do and then redo when you find yourself making mistake you have to get it right the first time or you will mess up your client.
I had to practice many times as well as offer many free services so that I could better my craft. I also had to learn how to market and advertise my service so that I could attract clients. Marketing and advertising have been the most difficult because I have to be consistent with them.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a brow artist. I specialize in all things, eyebrows which consist of microblading, microshading, Ombré brows, brow tints, brow shaping, and brow lamination I am most proud of the growth I have shown since I first started out.
It was not easy and I still get discouraged sometimes but I will continue to move forward and push through when times get tough. What sets me apart from others is my prices. My prices are a lot more affordable than the many brow artist around.
What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson that I have learned during this journey.
Is you have to look out for yourself regardless of what other people are doing. I’ve learned a lot from YouTube videos and practicing with people. It has taught me to take my time and to trust in my skills. I learned to not compare my journey with anyone else’s because work for me was always been for me.
