Today we’d like to introduce you to Jordan Mason.
Hi Jordan, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
After graduating University, I started working in the mortgage industry. I spent a total of more than 7 years in the industry and fell in love with how the real estate process works. During my time in the mortgage industry, I was anxious to do more with my hands and to get outside and work. With the knowledge and connections, I had made within the housing market, home inspections seemed like a great direction to head in. Initially, I wanted to start a company that could get me out of the office a few times a week to break up the monotony of desk work. I attended the Inspection Certification Association to complete my required home inspection training, became a member of InterNACHI (International association of certified home inspectors), and sat for my Florida State Licensing exam. Once I passed my exam, I filed with the state to open my business 5 years ago.
I was lucky enough in the beginning to meet some amazing people who helped shape my knowledge and experience. I had another inspector who was willing to let me ride along with him whenever I could to learn, and even ended up flipping inspections my way when he was too busy. I sub-contracted through other companies to gain valuable experience in the field and took any opportunity I could to learn and grow. I ended up working for 4 years doing both the inspections and mortgage company full time which allowed me to grow my company at my own pace without having to worry about financially supporting my family. This allowed me to have a relationship approach to the business, it was all about meeting people and forging meaningful personal relationships throughout time. I have always felt that if you start a business and focus on the people and how you can best serve those people, be it clients or partners in the industry, the business will take care of itself.
Today, 5 years after obtaining my license, I am working full time in the field for myself doing something I love to do each and every day. This business has allowed me to grow a family and be a sole provider for them while setting my own schedule. Mason Inspections is going strong and even looking to grow and hire additional inspectors in the future.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle that I have had personally has been balance. In the beginning, the balance between the two jobs was a challenge and now the balance of switching off and not working is my biggest hurdle. I pride myself on my work ethic and because of that I sometimes find it hard to switch off and leave the work at the door. This industry has many amazing opportunities and can be extremely lucrative, however, it takes a lot of work and hours. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the business and just doing one more job which can take away from the little time I get with family.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Mason Inspections primarily focuses on two types of inspections. The first type is an inspection for families or individuals who are purchasing a new home to live in. This is really where we like to shine. It is our job to go into a property and spend 3-4 hours digging into the building and it components. Our goal is to give our client the best idea of the condition of the property as we physically can within our limitations. We treat each home as if our own family members were moving in.
The other type of inspection we perform are insurance inspections, In Florida, homeowners’ insurance companies require specific inspections prior to providing coverage on a home. Although not as involved as a purchase inspection, they are equally as important. Anytime someone needs new insurance or is looking to find a cheaper rate, we can come in and usually within about 30 minutes complete an insurance inspection to assist them.
Regardless of what type of inspection we are completing, our ultimate goal is to provide the best customer service in the Tampa Bay area.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts, or blogs that help you do your best?
In terms of professional-based media, there is an amazing community of home inspectors on social media, and specifically Instagram. The amount of support, knowledge, and numbers of people willing to help out is truly amazing to be a part of. InterNACHI (International Association of Certified Home Inspectors) has amazing podcasts, newsletters, forums, etc., which assists us in staying up to date on industry changes. In terms of personally, I spend a ton of time in my truck and sometimes the radio just doesn’t cut it. You can usually catch me listening to a crime podcast or an interesting book on audible.
