Today, we’d like to introduce you to Billy Pinckney.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a 21-year-old author and content creator from Little Falls, New Jersey. My passion for the game of baseball was prevalent at a young age when I became a batboy for the New Jersey Jackals independent team in 2013 at age eleven.
I spent the summers in the professional clubhouse, where I learned the intricacies of the game. I began to interview players in 2015 and was hired by the organization as the Press Box & Player Procurement Assistant in 2018. In 2019, I assisted the Field Manager in assembling a league championship-winning squad while assisting with gameday duties in the press box.
In 2022, I was named the Director of Digital Content, where I created digital content for social media, which included pregame/postgame reports and player interviews while being hands-on with the players and coaching staff. At the conclusion of ten seasons with the Jackals, I stepped away from the organization to shift my focus on my video production company, Batboy Productions LLC, as well as my objective of creating content at the major league and affiliated levels.
I’ve always had a passion for growing the game of baseball and finding ways to assist the younger generation. In June 2023, I published a book titled “Passion Prevails” to help inspire the next generation of youth athletes as they navigate their careers. I currently host “Big League Perspective,” where athletes discuss the perspective and outlook they need to succeed in sports and life.
I graduated from Montclair State University in January of 2024 with a degree in Sports Communication.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the main challenges for me has been to be patient.
I am thankful that I knew what I wanted to do at a young age, but with that comes being patient and remembering that nothing great is easy or happens overnight. Some opportunities happen faster or slower than others. The right things will happen at the right time with hard work, dedication, and diligence.
So many struggle with instant gratification in today’s society, and we have to recognize that great things take time to develop.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
I create baseball and sports-related content. I primarily interview baseball players. Much of my content is designed to help inform, entertain, and inspire youth athletes. My book “Passion Prevails” is a compilation of interviews with professional baseball players and coaches.
Due to being 21 years old and a young voice in the industry, my ability to connect with youth athletes is one of my strong suits. I’m proud of being able to be a role model for the youth and inspire them on a daily basis.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
When I first thought of a potential career in sports media at age 13, being a broadcaster was one of the only ways to be in front of the camera. That has rapidly evolved over the past several years with the rise of “influencers” and content creators.
I believe networks, especially sports-related networks, must embrace content creators and find ways to incorporate them into their content plans. I’d like to see more companies, brands, college programs, etc., embrace individuals who bring a unique way to engage fans and leverage their loyal following. Creators would need creative freedom with what they create through their unique style and not have many restraints.
Collab posts with the organization do not align with the “traditional” form of content that has typically been distributed in the past, but fans will appreciate the diversity in content. For example, the consumer will see some of their favorite creators working with their favorite team’s network or league and appreciate the deeper connection being built.
