Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Ostrovskiy.
Hi Anna, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began sewing at 10 years old out of necessity, nothing seemed to fit me, and there wasn’t much available. What started as a solution quickly grew into a passion, and I eventually graduated as a professional seamstress. I stayed close to the fashion and sewing world throughout my life, but in the last few years the calling came back stronger than ever, especially with the inspiration and support of my daughters.
I started small, teaching just a few students at a time, and quickly realized how much impact sewing could have on building confidence and creativity in kids. From there, Sewista Studio grew into a space where young people can learn technical skills, discover the joy of making something entirely their own, and proudly say, “I made this.”
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth. Running a small business means constantly switching between roles: one moment I’m teaching, the next I’m handling schedules, bookkeeping, or marketing. The biggest challenge is balancing it all. Quick replies may not be my strength (haha), but at the end of the day that’s simply part of building something you truly care about
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We teach anyone ages seven and up, in both group and private settings. Our classes begin with the basics, like learning to use a sewing machine and making simple accessories, and gradually progress to creating clothing and more detailed projects.
I’m fortunate to have teachers who share my values and who enjoy passing on a love for the craft. What makes our work so rewarding is watching students light up when they finish a project. The excitement in their eyes when they put on something they made themselves is absolutely priceless! And even if sewing doesn’t become their life’s work, I know it’s giving them so much more. It sharpens spatial awareness, encourages planning and problem-solving, and builds the ability to adapt when things don’t go as expected.
At the end of the day, sewing is just the medium -what really matters is kids realizing they can bring their own ideas to life
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that progress matters more than perfection. Just like in sewing, every crooked stitch is part of the journey, and moving forward with heart matters more than chasing perfection.
