Cortni Ortega of Saint Petersburg, FL on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Cortni Ortega and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Cortni, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
Over the past few years, I’ve worked hard to build something no one else could give me – self love and self-acceptance. The journey hasn’t been easy. It’s been raw, painful, and full of moments that forced me to confront parts of myself I once tried to avoid. But every step, every tear, and every setback was worth it. I’m proud of the inner work I’ve done- and continue to do- because it’s shaped the person I am today. And while I’m still healing, still growing, I now know that becoming better every day starts with choosing myself, again and again.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am the founder of two fashion companies that are beginning to inspire each other. This year I opened Cortni’s Creative Creations, a custom design company that produces custom orders for clients and businesses. Strange Clothing has also evolved. Over the past year, I’ve shifted the brand’s focus toward custom, one-of-a kind pieces- designed to reflect individuality and style with intention. This change wasn’t random; it came from seeing the true potential for growth in creating unique garments that stand out, especially for people right here in the Tampa Bay Area. Strange Clothing isn’t just a brand – it’s becoming an experience, tailored for those who want something that feels as original as they are.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: Who taught you the most about work?
The foundation of my work ethic was built by the examples set in my own home. I watched both of my parents, at different times, raise us as single parents – showing up everyday with grit, sacrifice and a quiet strength to provide for their children, no matter the circumstance. But the lessons didn’t stop there. My grandparents modeled that same relentless drive, doing whatever was necessary to support their families- and doing it with grace, humility and without complaint. From them, I didn’t just learn how to work hard- I learned how to work with purpose, pride and heart.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self to keep chasing your dreams — boldly and without apology. The challenges you’re facing now, the pain that feels so heavy and the obstacles that seem impossible… they won’t last forever. In time, they’ll become part of the story that made you stronger. You will heal. You will grow. And one day, you’ll look back and realize that every struggle was shaping you into the resilient, powerful person you were always meant to become.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
A belief I hold deeply is that everyone in this world deserves kindness and love. While I recognize there are exceptions — moments when someone’s actions may not seem worthy of compassion — I don’t believe it’s my role to judge or punish. I wasn’t put here to measure someone’s worthiness, but rather to be an example of what kindness can offer. Through love, empathy and grace, I hope to reflect the kind of light this world needs more of.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
If I were to lay down my name, my title and every possession I own, what would still remain is my integrity and my unwavering strength I bring as a leader. These aren’t qualities that can be stripped away — they are etched into the fabric of who I am. When something is rooted in your soul, it cannot be taken — only carried forward, no matter the circumstance.
