Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Gaston.
Hi Nancy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My love for teaching and art have always been a passion. My early days as a corporate trainer made work meaningful and enjoyable. I loved the classroom environment and found it very satisfying to see the results of my instruction. Also, during those corporate days I found myself drawing and painting for fun and for my family. I’m self taught but have also had great opportunities to learn from local artists who were inspiring. Then when I retired from the corporate world, I opened a small studio in a detached garage at my home in Illinois. It soon became my happy place! Within a few years, I moved to Florida full-time and closed my studio up north. I soon realized I needed to find my happy place in Florida! I opened a studio in Punta Gorda and began teaching and creating again.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a woman-owned sole proprietor I was almost sure I would face some challenges along the way. What I found instead is that the local Chamber of Commerce, surrounding businesses and the local community supported and embraced me. I was sure to be clear about my mission, my passion, and my capabilities and the support followed. My family and friends also made my road smooth and became huge cheerleaders for my success!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I love that as a local artist I have an opportunity to offer a fun and educational way to encourage and bring out the creativity in everyone. And, to meet some amazing people along the way. Most everyone tells me they have no experience or don’t think they can even draw a straight line with a ruler! That changes when you get in my studio for a class. Clients are amazed at what they can do! There is a great deal of satisfaction in that for them and for me as well!
I create in several mediums…acrylic on canvas, glass on glass, watercolor, paint pours, resin pours and more. There is something for everyone and all skill levels. I have a studio assistant, Terri Stadler, who is an amazing artist in her own right. She teaches in alcohol ink, acrylics and watercolors. The classes are fun and we encourage creativity! My studio is filled with the beautiful art we create and teach. Everyone who enters is amazed at the opportunity to take a class in whatever is of interest to them. I think the diversity in my offerings sets me apart from other artists and art studios.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’ve learned that following a dream or passion is not at all foolish or out of reach no matter your age. Don’t worry about whether you’re good enough. Paint, write, sing, dance or whatever makes you happy. And, I might add that if that calling comes to you even at age 80, just do it! Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire!
