Today we’d like to introduce you to Karson & Kaleb Centeno
Hi Karson & Kaleb, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
(This is their Dad interviewing them). We wanted to find a way to earn some money without having to buy a lot of stuff. So we decided on power-washing because we could watch a lot of videos and it seemed the easiest and cheapest thing we could do starting from zero. So we started practicing on our own house and driveway to learn how to do a good job with borrowed equipment, and then we knew that we needed our own equipment, so we did some trash can cleaning and driveway jobs with borrowed equipment, and then our Dad helped us trade in some of his old comic books to get money and trade in for a pressure washing machine. Karson thought it would be cool to make the business something like Mario Brothers since we were brothers so that’s where the Water Bros idea came from. Our Dad helped us develop that into our brand and something we could have fun with and be noticed with. So right now we are focused on just becoming well known without our neighborhood community of Live Oak instead of trying to go everywhere and it’s been working out okay so far, although we were doing better before the HOA told us we could not promote ourselves within our own community, so we have been trying to find other creative and low-cost ways around that challenge. The biggest thing that has worked so far is getting people on a quarterly subscription for trash can cleanings. Now we are looking into creating gift cards for our trash can cleaning services that people can gift to each other.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
HOA preventing us from marketing ourselves within our own neighborhood has been the biggest struggle as we don’t have a lot of money to do advertising. We have created and mailed postcards, but those are not working as well as what we did before when we could just walk around and meet and talk to our neighbors freely and hand them our information if they wanted it. Also, school and sports seasons have made it a little more difficult to schedule jobs. Some people might think we are too young when they first hear about us and our ages, but our videos show that we can handle a lot. Getting the word out to our neighbors who we want to focus on the most, because we can do things a lot more quickly and efficiently when we stay close to home.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We’re just two Tampa teens trying to earn our piece of the American Dream until we can play soccer for a living.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Kaleb – How to learn how to use a pressure washer and learn from Youtube what I need to know. I like to work.
Karson – How to talk to people and talk about our business one-on-one, and even talk about it in front of a group of local business people. I like talking to people.
